Falcons Fall To Rochostor 21-10 Friday Night One thing schools with small rosters cannot stand in football is to lose key personnel to injury. On Friday night, for the 1984 Homecoming game, the John Glenn Falcons played without four-year veteran Mark Cain, a sprained ankle, and senior quarterback Damon Groves, a knee injury, and with the make-shift line-up going for them, they dropped a 21-10 decision to a Rochester team that also has been struggling this year. However, out of bad situations often comes a positive result, and Falcon coach John Hostrawser may just have found a quarterback for the future as well as for use this year. And he didn't have to look any further than around his breakfast table as freshman Willie Hostrawser, filling in at quarterback for both Groves, the regular, and Cain, the back-up when he is forced into that position from his normal tailback spot, put on a pretty good performance as the game wore on. Rochester scored on the first possession of the game and during the first half, with a switched around backfield and some getting adjusted by young Hostrawser, the Falcons just couldn’t stay with their

visitors, but in the second half it was a different story. The overall end result of the two halves still is what counts in the end and it was Rochester's first win of the season against four losses as they escaped with a 21-10 victory over Glenn, dropping the Falcons to 2-3 on the season. In this drive freshman tailback Tim Walker carried no less than 12 times for 56 yards and he carried the final eight times in the drive to score from three yards out. A good kick by Adam Hoover made it 7-0 with Glenn yet to touch the ball on offense. The Falcons didn’t gain a first down and punted on the fourth

play, but Rochester, despite having good field position, this time was stopped after nine plays that started on the Falcon 41. Glenn took over again, but once more were thwarted in an effort to get a first down and the two teams then exchanged punts, keeping Glenn in their end of the field. On their third possession, a little swing pass by Hostrawser was easily picked off by Rochester’s Garrett Jacobs and returned 13 yards to the Falcon 5 yard line where it was first and goal. It took Walker just two plays to pick up the five yards and the game’s second score. Hoover again kicked the extra point and it was 14-0 with only 3:52 left in the first half. The Falcons did gain a first down on their next series, but an interception followed that and the first half ended 14-0. Just to show how much the Zebras had the ball, they snapped the ball from center 32 times while the Falcons had only 15 attempts on offense. The second half was considerably different. Glenn got the ball and started at their own 26 after a short return on a low kick. However, in this half, coach Hostrawser was going to find out how quarerback Hostrawser would hold up under fire. He came out throwing on more occasions than they ran and had pretty good success on the short stuff with an occasional long pass to keep things honest. This did allow the Falcons to move the ball on several occasions and to get some first downs. After picking up three first downs along the way, they finally were stopped at the Rochester 34 when a fourth down pass fell incomplete after a penalty had hurt this last set of downs. The visitors were once again able to sustain a drive with the two big gainers being a 15 yard scamper on a keeper play by quarterback Ed Pfeiffer and a costly 15 yard personal foul penalty on Glenn. This enabled the Fulton County crew to move the 66 yards needed on just eight plays with Walker carrying in from nine yards out, his longest run of the night. Hoover again kicked the point after and it was 21-0 with 4:15 left in the third stanza. Darrin Fisher, who last year ran a kickoff back against Rochester in the final seconds to pull Glenn within a single point only to lose the game when a two point conversion was called back for a procedure call, almost did it again. He took the kickoff at his own 15 and broke right through the middle for 65 yards before being overtaken from behind at the Rochester 20 yard line where it was first and 10. Hostrawser hit Rod Snyder for four and then Fisher for seven, making it first and goal at the nine. On the next play, David Rupel, who complimented Cain so well in the two victories but who is having trouble getting any yardage with Cain out, finally broke loose around the left end and scampered nine yards into the end zone for the score. The Falcons then went for two points and Hostrawser rifled a pass to Fisher on a post pattern and it was 20-8 with a lot more confidence now showing on the Falcon team. Some wild action followed. The Zebras were held without a first down by an inspired Falcon team and when they went into punt formation, a bad snap from center was finally covered by the punter, Adam Hoover, for a loss of 21 yards and a Glenn first and 10 from the Rochester 25 yard line. A 17 yard pass from Hostrawser to Snyder after a two yard run by Snyder made it first and goal from the six, but the inexperience showed on the next play when a pitchout was wild on an attempted sweep and Glenn recovered for a loss back to the 10. They then threw two incomplete passes, and after a timeout, tried a halfback option with Rupel going around the right side before throwing into the end zone only to have it picked off for a touch back. Glenn held again, and this time punting deep in their own territory,

another bad snap sailed over the head of Hoover and bounced out of the end zone for a Glenn safety, making it 21-10 and setting Glenn to receive the ball on a free kick with 9:32 still remaining. The Falcons returned the kick to the Rochester 41 and picked up a first down on a key fourth and 7 situation on another Hostrawser to Fisher pass. However the Zebra defense then dug in and held and after three incomplete passes, the Falcons gave up possession on what was to be their last serious threat of the night. Rochester was able to run out the clock by using two Glenn penalities and a grind it out offense to run 16 plays before time expired to end the game. This week the Falcons go on the road again as they finished a string of four straight home games. The game is probably the most important on their schedule if they are to advance to the playoffs as this is a key cluster game with Bremen, who currently stands 2-0 in cluster play with the Falcons also 2-0 for the playoff battle. The game will be played at Bremen at 7:30 p.m. Friday night and it is hoped that the injured players will be ready for action in this all important game against Don Bunge’s Lions.
