LaVille Too Much For Falcons; Win 26-0 Game The LaVille Lancers scored two times in their first four offensive plays Friday and put 14 fast points on the scoreboard in four and a half minutes, and then went on to top the John Glenn Falcons 26-0. The Falcons, after falling behind, had their offensive plan changed considerably in the later stages of the first quarter when quarterback Damon Groves suffered a leg injury that took him out of the game and coach John Hostrawser choose to shift senior tailback Mark Cain to quarterback instead of a freshman and the result was a big minus left in the Falcon running game. Cain, who had 502 yards in three games coming into this contest, still ended as the Falcons leading rusher, but running out of the quarterback spot just isn’t the same as the deep spot in an I formation. The loss was Glenn’s second in four games and was neither a cluster or conference game as the Northern State Conference was forced to drop a conference standings in football due to the varied schedules forced on teams by the cluster system. LaVille raised their season record to 2-2 with the victory. play with the fleet halfback getting outside the Falcon defense and taking the ball 70 yards untouched for a score. A missed extra point left it at 6-0, but the visitors had asserted themselves very quickly in this game. The Falcons started at their own 39, very good field position and after a Groves to Darrin Fisher pass picked up seven. Cain got a first down on a five yard scamper after being held at the line of scrimmage on his first carry. Another hit into the line gained nothing, but on the second down, a handoff from Groves to David Rupel wasn't handled well and a fumble resulted with Daryl Zartman covering the loose ball for LaVille. On the first play, Adkins hit Zartman for 51 yards and a first and goal at the 4. It took just one more play and Charlie Cox lugged the ball into the end zone for the second Lancer TD. This time Adkins ran in the two extra points and it was 14-0 with still 7:30 left in the opening stanza. The two teams then traded possessions on punts after neither could get a first down and on the first play of Glenn’s next possession, Groves was forced to scramble to his right and threw an incomplete pass on which he never got off the ground. He was carried off the field and Cain took over at the signal calling position at this point. Glenn did manage two first downs on a 15 yard run by Cain and a 25 yard pass from Cain to Rod Snyder. However they were unable to further sustain the drive and turned the ball over on downs. A couple of plays later, Adkins was intercepted by Fisher who returned the areial 22 yards to the LaVille 28, only to have a Cain pass picked off also on the first play and carried back to the Glenn 47. However, two plays later another turnover followed, this a fumble by Cox and David Searfoss covered the loose ball. From their own 39, the Falcons went right to work. A six yard rush by Rupel was followed by an 11 yard pass, Cain to Snyder. Snyder then broke into the open for 25 yards on a run and on the next play Cain carried inside the 10 to the nine for a first and goal. The Lancer defense tightened and after

an incomplete pass and a one yard loss by Cain, Cain scrambled free around the left side and dove towards pay dirt but was out at the one. A fourth down play lost a yard as the big LaVille team was waiting for Rupel and possession changed at the two. LaVille then put on quite a drive. Using 14 plays, they covered 98 yards with a dozen rushes and two’ completed passes. Adkins carried five times himself and hit the two passes to spearhead the ball control scoring drive. Cox plunged in from the three to cap the drive which made it 20-0 with just 55 ticks of the clock left in the first half. The scoring was completed on LaVille’s first possession of the second half. Glenn received the kick but couldn't gain a thing and punted the ball away. LaVille took it on their own 26 after a clipping call on the punt runback. This time they put on a 15 play drive to cover the 74 yards with Adkins again spearheading the attack as he had a 22 yard scamper on a key fourth down play. Bettcher ran the final 10 yards for his second touchdown of the night. For the third time, the kick was no good as the Lancers took what was to be the final margin, a 26-0 lead. The Falcons did get down inside the 10 on one more occasion, moving from their own three yard line to LaVille’s 9 before losing a yard on a play and turning the ball over on downs. In this drive Cain hit two 26 yard passes for the big plays. However, the strength of LaVille and the shifting of positions for Glenn both played an important part in the 26-0 result. Bettcher, with the 70 yard run being the big play of the game, had 144 yards in 14 carries. Adkins picked up 64 in a dozen tries and also did all the LaVille passing. Jeff Overholser had an impressive 51 yards in just three carries in limited duty. Cain ended with 65 in 12 carries and had a passing record of six out of 18 for 79 yards with two interceptions.
