Big Plays Spark Falcons Victory Over Cavaliers The John Glenn Falcons used the big play on several occasions to win their first game of the young football season Friday night by a 28-6 score over the Culver Cavaliers. This was a cluster game for the Falcons, counting towards the end-of-the-season playoffs. The win evened the Falcons record at 1-1 while Culver slipped to 0-2 in the new season. Behind a great 204 yard effort by Mark Cain and another 108 yards picked up by David Rupel, the Falcons were able to break several big plays on the ground to account for the victory. Add to that a defense that pretty well shut off the Cavaliers with the exception of two drives, one of which resulted in a score while the other died on the one yard line, the Falcons were never in serious trouble after gaining a 21 -0 early lead. After kicking off to the Cavaliers and stopping them without a first down, Glenn fielded a punt at their own 48 to put the first drive into motion. A 26 yard halfback pass from Cain to Rod Snyder on the first play got things really moving and then Cain hit for 2 and 16 yards for another first down at the 8 yard line, goal to go. Three plunges into the line by David Rupel and Cain’s 3 yard scamper for the score ended the seven play drive with 5:48 left on the clock in the first quarter. David Rupel then kicked the extra point and it was 7-0. The second score was more of the same. The Falcons defense stopped the Cavs and forced another punt which this time was returned 12 yards by Cain to the Culver 49. It took just five plays, but the first and last were runs of 26 and 22 yards for the score. Another good kick by Rupel made it 14-0 with 2:20 remaining in the opening quarter. The Falcons put the game safely ahead on another similar set of plays. Stoping the Culver team once again, they forced another punt, this drive starting at the Glenn 40. A run by Rupel for 4, one by Cain for 2 and a 15 yard pass from Cain to Damon Groves, made it first and 10 at the Culver 39. On the next play, Rupel broke free up the middle and outran the Culver secondary to race 39 yards
for the third touchdown. Another good Rupel kick made it 21-0. A quick exchange of possessions followed the next kickoff. Culver put the ball in play at their own 26 and Cain intercepted a pass on first down that looked like the Falcons might strike again from only 33 yards out. However, after a 15 yard penalty for clipping, Rupel ripped off 15 yards and then fumbled on a run that gave the Cavaliers the ball back at their own 37. To Culver’s credit, they didn’t quite. In fact, they put on a drive that consumed over half the second period, taking 13 plays of both running and passing to cover 63 yards with John Pugh finally plowing over from 4 yards out. A pass was picked off on the attempted two point conversion and it was 21-6 with 3:33 left in the half. The Falcons were then able to run the rest of the clock off before punting on the last play of the half. The second half found another long drive by Culver taking much time off the clock. After the Falcons received the second half kick and gained one first down on a 25 yard run by Cain, they eventually were forced to punt and Culver took over on their own 19 yard line. From here they started a drive of 16 plays that included three completed passes, one incomplete pass and a dozen rushes only to have the final play stopped between the one and two yard line. On the first play, Rupel broke free on the right side and had moved to midfield before being caught from behind and in an attempt to lateral the ball, it bounced loose and was covered by Culver’s Butch Engle to give the ball back to Culver. However, the Cavaliers weren’t able to get a first down and punted the ball away after the Rupel brothers, David and Robert, each had a sack of the Culver quarterback. The punt died on the 32 yard line as play had moved into the fourth quarter on this series of downs. It then took just one play, as Cain burst through the middle, veered a little right and outran the Culver defenders for a 68 yard scoring scamper that made the score 28-6 after Rupel added his fourth good conversion kick. This came with 10:44 left to play, and the teams traded possessions five times after that in running out the dock with no more scoring threats. The win was important for Glenn as they face another cluster opponent Friday, Triton, at home at 7:30 p.m. Then a couple of strong opponents will visit in LaVille and Rochester to complete a four-game home stand before the Falcons travel to Bremen for what already shapes up as a key duster game as Bremen defeated South Central in their first duster action. The schedule doesn’t get any easier as it progresses, with the likes of New Prairie, South Central, Jimtown and Wawasee waiting in the wings, all on the road except for New Prairie.
