KNOX TOO MUCH FOR FALCONS IN FOOTBALL OPENER The Knox Redskins were too dominate in the season opener as they used a powerful offensive attack of balanced running and passing to drop the John Glenn Falcons 34-7 in the 1984 season opener. Glenn, nortorious over the years for their slow starts, was often their own worst enemy as six fumbles resulted in three losses of possession as the team just had trouble with handoffs and holding on to the pigskin. The Knox tandem of Jim Risner and Greg Moore, picked up 177 and 86 yards respectively, Risner cartying the ball 27 times while Moore recorded 17 rushes to gain his yardage. Add to this a fine nine out of 15 passing for 147 yards and their was more offense and ball control than the Falcons could withstand. After gaining one first down on two rushes by Cain, a fumble on the fourth play was covered by Knox’s Herman Rodgers at the Knox 46 yard line. A flanker pass from Kirk Bennett to John Kusturin on the first play was good for 32 yards and then it was five rushes with Risner and Moore alternating until Risner punched it over from five yards out. Bennett kicked the extra point and after a big turnover early, the host Redskins had a 7-0 lead with only 5:12 gone in the game. Knox struck very quick the next time they got the ball. A squibb kickoff was only returned to the Glenn 19 and after Damon Groves was smeared for a 10 yard loss on an attempted third down pass, a punt only moved the ball to the Glenn 34. On the first play, Troy Snyder hit the big flanker Bennett for the 34 yards and another score. Another good kick by Bennett and it was 14-0 with still 4:25 left in the opening stanza. Glenn turned the ball over again

on the first play from scrimmage after two costly penalties had been walked off. However, Knox also was victim of two flags in a row after Harold Smith recovered Cain's bobble, and the Redskins were pushed back far enough they tried an unsuccessful field goal from the 24 near the end of the first quarter. Knox moved 53 yards in 7 plays on their next possession after another punt with Risner having a big 25 yard run for the big play and in ail seven ground plays chewed up the yardage. Risner capped it with a four yard burst into the end zone and Bennett made it 21-0 with 9:05 left in the first half. Glenn was forced to punt again, but after receiving the ball, Snyder had an aerial picked off by Cain who returned the ball 40 yards to the Knox 11. A halfback option pass by Cain was no good on first down, but on the second play Groves scrambled around quite a bit before picking up an open Jim Viscik in the end zone and for an 11 yard touchdown pass. David Rupel kicked the extra point and it was 21-7, the way the first half was to end after Knox tried another long field goal of 36 yards late in the half. The second half was perfect ball control by the Redskins until well into the final quarter. Taking the second half kick from their own 28, it was a 15 play drive with 14 rushes and one three yard pass completion mixed in that moved the ball 72 yards for the score on a one yard plunge by Moore and moved the clock around for almost seven minutes. A bobbled snap from center on the extra point resulted in a missed pass for the extra point but the lead was increased to 27-7 by the host team. Glenn then ran seven plays, thanks to an illegal fair catch penalty on a Falcon punt that gave the Falcons four more downs before having to punt the ball away

anyway. Knox picked up a couple of first downs, but Rod Snyder picked off a Troy Snyder pass to stop this drive only to have the Falcons fumble the ball away again on first down. Knox recovered at their own 46 and they proceeded to move the ball 54 yards in 8 plays with Snyder hitting Bennett for the final 20 for the score. Bennett's kick ended the scoring for the night at 34-7. The Falcons have a lot of work to do before their first cluster game this Friday which is also their first home game. The Culver Cavaliers will be the opponents at 7:30 p.m. on the Falcons Field. With several lettermen returning for Glenn, it appears to be a matter of filling a few holes and getting their act together in another year with a strong schedule facing them.
