Rebecca Harris, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. David Harris, of Lakeville, makes her professional theatrical debut as Princess Chu in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “The King And I”. The production is being presented in Syracuse at the Enchanted Hills Playhouse. This talented 7 year-old, in second grade at St. Patrick’s School, is an extremely well-rounded performer. Miss Harris studies dance, gymnastics, loves animals and is most thrilled to be one of the royal princesses in “The King And I”. Loaded with such favorite numbers as “I Whistle A Happy Tune’’, "Getting To Know You”, “Hello Young Lovers” and “Shall We Dance”. “The King And I” will be performed Wednesday through Sunday evenings, July 18 through 22. JERRY MERKEL PASSES ACTUARY SCIENCE EXAM Jerry Merkel has recently passed Part 1 of the Actuary Science Examinations administered nationwide by the Society of Actuaries, Chicago. The exam contained 60 mathematical problems which the candidate was given three hours to solve. The actuarial profession requires a good mathematical aptitude. Actuaries are disciplined problem solvers who use mathematical skills to create and manage programs to reduce the financial impact of expected and unexpected occurrences. Actuaries design these plans and evaluate the financial risk an insurance company takes when it sells an insurance policy or offers a pension program. Jerry will be a junior at Ball State University this fall. AWALD ATTENDS NVATA REGIONAL CONFERENCE Mr. Dan Awald, vocational agriculture teacher in the Morgan Twp. School, at Valparaiso, attended the
National Vocational Agricultural Teachers’ Association (NVATA) Regional Leadership Conference at Lexington, Kentucky, on June 2830. He joined other vocational educators in agriculture to discuss issues confronting the profession. Vocational agriculture teachers from five state NVATA affiliated state associations participated in the three day conference. Six conferences are scheduled in 1984 to develop professional leaership, acquaint state association leaders with responsibilities related to the national organization, discuss mutual problems facing agricultural education, give direction to the NVATA, and become more knowledgeable about programs of vocational education in agriculture. The conferences include workshops on Quality Education, State/Federal Legislation, Agriculture/Agribusiness Relations and Membership Development. Mr. Awald was one of the three agricultural educators representing the Indiana VATA at the conference. He is currently serving as secretary for the state association. In addition to representing the SV ATA, he also served as a member of the Regional Citation Committee, a special committee appointed to select citation winners. The Kentucky Vocational Agriculture Teachers’ Association served as local hosts and arranged for meeting facilities, special functions and educational tours. The meeting was conducted by Craig Wiget, NVATA Region Vice President. He teaches vocational agriculture at Mt. Blanchard, Ohio. Dale Butcher, NVATA President, West Lafayette, attended the conference and served as the professional consultant. Members of the trio are William Foster, piano; Bruce Evans, bass; and Jeffrey Brown on drums. All three teach music at Valparaiso University and have performed professionally with wellknown entertainers. The concert is part of the Cultural Arts Program sponsored by, the Indiana Division of State Parks. Talented Indiana Artists will present wholesome entertainment in the natural park setting. VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL JULY 23 - 27 The First Baptist Church, at Clark and Maine Streets, Walkerton, will conduct their annual DailyVacation Bible School, July 23 through 27, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The theme for this year will be “God Is Able”. There will be classes for ages four to teens. No fee is required, but a free will offering will be received daily. The program will be presented at 7:00 p.m. on July 29.
