The course, which will be available through the Marshall County Extension Service located at the Marshall County Office Building will begin on Monday, August 27 and last through Monday, December 10. The agronomy course will run consecutive Mondays (other than Labor Day) from 7:00 - 10:00 p.m. This is a three credit course and should compliment many graduate plans of study. “Intermediate Soil Science’’ may be taken for graduate, undergraduate and non credit (adult) basis. Fees for the course are the same, regardless of type of credit and will be $168.00. The course is an advanced study of important topics in soil science, including fertility and fetrilizers, soil chemical and physical properties, classification and management of soils. The emphasis will be on the fertility, fertilizers and chemistry of soils. Students will be required to perform out-of-class exercises on the use of soil surveys, soil sampling, fertilizer recommendations and other topics.
Prerequisites suggested for the course are an introductory soils course or significant experience in soils and fertilizer practices. This course should be interesting and useful to: Cooperative Extension Agents, Soil Conservation Service Personnel, Vocational Aricultural Teachers, Crop Producer, Farm managers and consultants, farm chemical sales representatives and others interested in Soil Science. For additional information concerning the course, contact Curt Middleton or Marcy Fey at the county extension office, 935-8545. WALKERTON ELEMENTARY SUMMER SCHOOL ENDS Six weeks of summer school ended on July 13 for 35 Walkerton Elementary students. These first through fourth graders were enrolled in a program of skill building and maintenance in reading and math. Students received math computer instruction daily from Mitzi Knepper. In addition, 17 pupils participated in a reading program which provided them 15 minutes of one-on-one instruction each day with Alice Bostwick, Pam Walz and Mary Vukovitz. A successful combination of work and play provided the incentive for 14 students to earn a certificate for perfect attendance which entitles them to a free sundae at Jacob’s Drug Store, downtown Walkerton. Those students include Jemi Adkins, Jayson Auman, Shawn Brovold, Philip Bukowski, Sammy Dollahan, Jane and Mary Graham, Jodi McLaughlin, Shelly McNeal, Jeff Personette, Crystal and Kim Phenis, Casey Setnor and Lori Wise. Other enjoyable experiences included a trip to the circus and a swimming party and luncheon. We wish to thank all the parents, children and teachers who contributed to the success of our summer school program. Carol Huffstetter
