Marian Explodes In Final 3 Minutes For Victorv

The Marian Knights blew a tight game wide open in the last three minutes to not only claim a victorv over John Glenn Friday night, hut hand the Falcons their first loss of the season. The final score of 68-51 doesn't tell the story of this game. Matching a 13-0 Glenn team and a fine 13-1 Marian squad, the game was the small schixil spotlight of Northern Indiana (and perhaps a good part of the state) Friday night and the atmosphere and attitude of the fans just added to w hat high school basketball is all about. Before a packed house, everyone had to enjoy the night even though the Glenn fans traveled home on the wrong end of the final score, a team beaten on the scoreboard, but with nothing to be ashamed of. Despite never trailing the visiting Falcons, the host Knights held onlv a two point lead. 51-49. after Rick Hardesty’s two free throws with just 3:07 left in (he game. However, what happened from here on in is a page of history in the Marian basketball program that the Knights can be proud of. A IS point run against a now struggling Glenn team, included no less than a perfect six for six from the floor with three free throws tossed in before the Falcons'could get their last two points of the game with just :!0 showing on the ckxk and both benches emptied. After the free throws pulled the Falcons to within two. a crucial three-point play on a rebound lay-in by Marian s Rick Bliha. was the turn ing point. Then, after the Falcons moved down floor and missed a shot, a great pass from Jerome ( aidcrone, the outstanding plavcr of the night, let Bhha get another easy two points with 2;05 left and now trailing by seven, the Falcons hit the panic button in an attempt to get back in the game. A missed free throw bv Glenn gave the Knights (he ball once again, and it was ( alderone one more time threading the needle with a pass to a waiting Eric Stahl, for another easy lay-up and the late rush was on. Before Lance Singleton got Glenn's final two points. Bliha added two free throws, (alderone a lay-in off a steal out front. Stahl one more lay-in and Bliha ended the 15 point spurt with a lay-in after ( alderone look the ball awa\ from Glenn one more time and fed the lead pass for the basket. A pair of free throws with :05 left by reserve Andy DeCockcr just set the final score. The early game found the host Knights using something they have gained in earlier games against more physical opponents than the Falcons have played, that being strong and physical play underneath. something that onlv comes with experiencing it in competition. With a front line of only 6'2” across, the Knights wanted to take the ball to the taller Falcons and did. forcing it inside to cause Glenn a 10l of problems. Stahl opened (he scoring with two free throws as (he Knights were to draw several louis early tn in this game with their inside penetration. Mark Jacobson tied it al 2 with a lay-in w hen Glenn beat the Marian press, and after Stahl hit from under. Jacobson again made it 4 all with another inside shot. Glenn was now to go for three and a half minutes without a point as successive baskets bv Calderone. Paul Moreland and Bhha pulled (he Knights to the lead. Mike Arnett managed to gel six points in •he last 3:03 and Jeff Fansler added a basket as Glenn only trailed by two. 14-12. after one. However, the tide was still in Marian's favor and even though the Falcons were always in the game. Marian just seemed to be controlling the game. A six point spurt better than half way through the second period pulled the Falcons within two on successive baskets bv Arnett. Spencer Wilcox

and Barry Bottorff. However, from here on out it was two for two with Marian also sneaking in a buzzer-beating lay-in bv Stahl off a nice ( alderone feed to make it 30-26 at halftime. I he Falcons did come back to tic the score twice in the first three and a half minutes of the second half. However, with the Falcons holding the inside game down a little, ( alderone started his show and he was the dominate factor in the game, not only with his scoring hut also with his fine passing and running the team. He and Bliha also took away a lot of the Glenn guard play, taking Hardestv almost completely out of the game with their defense out front that stopped a lot of things before it got started. After the second tie score al 34 all. Marian ran off five last points and after another Arnett shot from in close on the baseline, hit two more baskets to take a lead thev turned into a 45-3" advantage after three. Marian's only mistake of the night came when they went into a four corner offense in the fourth quarter and instead of looking for the lay in and good shot, thev didn't play under control and Calderone. despite his great night, tried to do too much. This allowed the Falcons to creep back into the game. Stahl was first in the final stanza with a lay-in off another J.C. pass. Wilcox hit a lay-in from the right baseline, but Stahl hit two tree throws at the 6:30 mark. Howes er. it was to be over three minutes before the Knights were to score again as they went into their four corner game. Arnett hit first for Glenn from 19. then it was three straight baskets by Scott Pontius over a two minute perirxi. the last one a rebound shot that made it 49-4". (alderone hit a twisting driving shot from the lane as they now were back in their normal oftense alter a timeout, but Hardestv was fouled just seconds later to set up the strong Marian finish and victory that was bv a much larger margin than the game should have been. Calderone Hits 23 ( alderone ended the night with 23 points and a bag full of assists. He made good on 10 baskets and three of lour from the line. He had great balance from three other starters. Stahl with 16. Bliha 15. and Moreland 10. Arnett paced the Falcons with 16 punts and was the only Falcon consistent throughout the game. Pontius ended with 13. all but two in the second half. Falcons Nip Knox 64-56 In Comeback The Knox Redskins invaded the nest of the Falcons Tuesday night in a key Northern State Conference game, the best Knox team we have seen in years gave the Falcons more than thev wanted before Glenn used the free throw line to record victory number 14 against one Ipss. It was also their fourth conference victory without a loss and the game for undisputed first place in conference play will come Friday night when Glenn hosts LaVilie. Knox started out very strong, used a lot of hustle and muscle and really had the Falcons reeling on several (Kcasions. hut their own inability to convert several of their better and easier chances in the first half kept them from possibly piling up too much of a lead in what eventually turned out to be a 64-56 Glenn victory. With Mike M<x>re, Marvin Prater and Kevin Taulbee providing the underneath muscle early, the Redskins dominated the inside play and after a brief 4-2 Falcon lead. Knox pulled ahead and led 17-12 after one quarter of play. On several occasions in the second quarter, Knox led by eight and late in the half, they increased this to nine twice, with chances to go even further up only to have a few blown chances especially on fast breaks go array, and with a desperation 48 footer by Mike Aitken at the final buzzer. Glenn trailed 35-28 at halftime with Knox definitely controlling the first half. Only Mike Arnett, the sharpshixvting senior for Glenn, was consistent in the first half and he totaled 16 of Glenn’s first half 28. mostly on bombs from the corner and deep baseline. Knox also was getting into mild foul trouble in the first half, which was to be a key later in the game as they just don't have much of a bench to rely on. It took a great effort on both ends of the fhxir in the third quarter for the Falcons to ge( back in contention and eventually catch up. With a pressure defense forcing some errors, and then taking advantage of many opportunities, the comeback began. After Prater hit a medium baseline shot on which he was fouled but missed the free throw. Arnett tickled the twine from the left corner. Moore made a steal underneath that raised some eyebrows and converted it to a lay-in, but Arnett again was true from the deep corner. Spencer Wilcox got a rebound basket and Jeff Fansler was next with a lay-in off an Arnett feed. Arnett then completed an eight point surge with a rebound basket off a fast break as the Falcons were really going to the boards and this was a big difference in the second half. Now leading by only one. Steve Banks then sunk two in a row from the 17 foot range for Knox to break a two minute dry spell. However. Arnett, Mark Jacobson, Rick Hardesty and Fansler hit in succession to take a 46-43 lead before Banks beat the buzzer with an 18 footer to make it a one-point Falcon lead after three. Knox led one more brief time as Banks hit his fourth in a row shortly after the last period started. The parade to the free throw line was now underway for Glenn however, and this is usually fatal for opponents. Jacobson and Arnett hit two apiece before Pete Quella was true from 14 foot. Arnett put a missed Falcon shot back up and in and after Quella hit one of two from the line, Jacobson hit two more. This made it 54-50 with just over three minutes left to play. The Falcons lost a couple of chances in their next two possessions and Knox took advantage of it with baskets by Taulbee and Quella to knot the score with 209 left It was then the free throw line that

made the difference. Hardesty getting fouled out front, converted two and after Knox failed to score on their possession. Jacobson was fouled and hit two more. Then a turnover and a four-point play on an intentional foul on Hardestv as he hit a lay-in, iced the game. He added two more points to his four point play later and Kirk Bennett's basket at the end just set the final score. Arnett ended with 28 big points for Glenn, holding the Falcons in the game until second hall help came in the form of 12 and 10 points by Hardesty and Jacobson. M<x>re and Prater. Knox's two leading scorers all year, ended with 15 and 12 respectively before hoth fouled out Banks also hit double digits with 10 points. In the end, 20 of 24 free throws was the deciding factor for Glenn as Knox had only four of nine from the stripe. B-Team Wins Big The Falcon B-Team racked up their eighth win of the year, easilv dropping the Knox reserves 52-32.
