CONGRATULATIONS CHAMPS We would like to say “Congratulations" to two fine basketball teams and their coaches on Saturday night as the championship game of the 1983 Bi-County Tourney displayed just what high school athletics are all about. Os course there had to be a winner and a loser . . . according to the score . . . but Saturday night there were no real losers as the kids from John Glenn and Oregon-Davis both displayed a lot more than just basketball ability in this exciting championship game. Too much is probably said about the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. These two extremes had to be more than felt Saturday night after the final buzzer sounded after 38 minutes of hard, thrilling action. However, we hope that by Sunday morning, more than the immediate reaction to the game remained in the minds and hearts of the kids as these two teams thrilled a near capacity crowd of 2,500 at LaVille with a display of athletic ability, sportsmanship and character. Naturally our hats are tipped to the champions of Gordon Mosson, who have this year surprised everyone with the turn around in the Glenn basketball program. Last year a team with more individual talent traveled to LaVille as at least a cofavorite in the tourney, only to come home a loser, iroinically by the same score they returned a winner this year, 59-58. This year started without a lot of pomp an circumstance as the losses by graduation and injury had reduced this team to what many probably felt was just another team . . . but there is the key word . . . team. Mosson, in his first season as a varsity coach, has been able to put together the complete asset of team concept and team play. Despite having one or two who appeared to be the backbone of the team, each and everyone has taken his own task and his own talents and put them to use as coach Mosson wants. The success is obvious. And on the other side of the coin, the Oregon-Davis team shares a lot of the same concept. With more returning players for coach Dan Warkentien, he still has had control of his boys and the three extremely hard games they played last week in three consecutive nights, displayed his ability to plan and get response out of his boys also, something that is needed in any successful team effort. Glenn now heads into a real busy part of the schedule and have some very worthwhile opponents looming in the near future. In fact, with the exception of the recently completed tourney, the toughest part lies ahead, and it will all boil down in another five weeks to 10 season games and the all-important and anticipated sectional tourney at Plymouth. Likewise, Oregon-Davis heads into their final five weeks, with a lighter schedule as they have already played more games, but with the same outlook in mind, their season play and then the Sectional tourney at Winamac, with a chance to advance on to the regioinal level of the state tourney. We wish both of these fine clubs and their coaches, the very best. This past weekend belonged to them in a true example of what competition at this level is all about. And we also must congratulate the fans, we especially were impressed with the Glenn students and adult fans as they displayed the best following and support of their team in a good many years. The fans on both sides accepted things as they were and had to swallow hard at some times and express their happiness at others. The entire tourney and action at LaVille just further goes to publicly display what the majority of kids are still all about. Keep up the good work!
