Cougars Nip Falcons On Last Play One or two ticks of the clock . . . or one or two inches .. . either one 1 might just have turned the John Glenn football homecoming game with New Prairie from a heartbreaking defeat 13-7, into an over- ’ time bailgame with both teams starting even again. And the way the Falcons came back in the second half, they would have to have been rated at least an even chance of winning the tie-breaking formula employed by Indiana High School football. As it stands however, it was a 13-7 New Prairie win as quarterback Dale Nagy, in the minds of the officials, got the snap and the inches needed on the last play of the game according to hoyle and the result was the heartbreaking loss. This dropped the Falcons to 2-5 overall this season and 2-3 in Northern State Conference play while New Prairie has won three of seven overall, all their wins in confrcncce plav against on conference loss. A 12 play drive covering 73 yards, all on the ground, finally ended with Scott Gierke carrying the ball in from one yard out. Brad Feece kicked the extra point and it was 7-0. last play of the half with the Cougars getting fine field position a few minutes earlier when a snap from center went over punter Jeff Fansler’s head. Fansler did however, make a great play in getting a kick off which only netted 7 yards from the line of scrimmage but at least 35 from where he finally was able to kick the ball on the dead run. The Cougars moved to the 8 yard line where a field goal try by Feece was blocked, keeping the score at 7-0 at halftime. Then things completely turned around. Sophomore Mark Cain started moving his team very well and on the first possession finally lost the ball on downs at the NP 30, only to get another drive going after forcing a punt that was moving even better. With four pass completions spread around and Fansler the principle runner, the Falcons moved clear down to the 2 before an unfortunate fumble was covered by New Prairie's Derek Klute to stop this Falcon drive. Glenn forced another punt as the defense was really stiff, and took over on the New Prairie 34 after a return by Fansler. This led to a

seven play drive, two completed passes and five rushes that found Fansler powering over from 4 yards out. Todd Cummins kicked the extra point and it was deadlocked at 7 with 7:04 left in the game. Glenn held once again, but the Cougars did the same and on the exchange of punts the Cougars had the advantage as this time it was a low snap that forced Fansler to get a hurried kick off. New Prairie took possession on their own 46 with under four minutes to go. A first down on two rushes was followed by three more downs that did very little, but a big fourth down pass from Nagy to Dave Smith picked up 33 yards and a first and goal at the Falcon 9. A five yard carry, then two, set the stage for the hectic climax. The Cougars used their last timeout with :27 showing, third and goal at the 2. On the first play Nagy was clearly short of the goal line, but a hurried up lineup and snap just beat the clock and the big pileup that resulted took at least 30 seconds to untangle before the officials gave the arms up signal of the score. To
Glenn’s credit however, even after this hard to-take loss, they still didn't quit and blocked the meaningless extra point. The Falcons will this week travel to South Central for a game with the Satellites, one that should be a good football game for all.
