Auxiliary Hears About Girls’ State Week Orville Easterday Unit 1 89. American Legion Auxiliary, met in regular session for their August meeting conducted by Mrs. Robert Wardman, president. The Chaplain. Mrs. Lee Chapman, opened the meeting in prayer with these partial thoughts: “Lead us and our Nation with the light of truth and guide us in the ways of Liberty and justice for all.” Present for this meeting were Kristine Kopanski and Brenda Brecht, who were delegates to the American Legion Auxiliary Hoosier Girls' State session held on campus of Indiana State University. Terre Haute. Students of John Glenn High School, they related their experiences of working w ith over 800 young women, learning about the government of their state. Each girl who attends Girls’ State must file and run for a government office, be it on a city level or on a county or state level. All the girls arc assigned to mythical cities (which are named after Past Indiana Department Presidents). From there they start their gain of government knowledge. They related they now understand more clearly the workings of the government and also the truer meaning of the Pledge of Allegiance to our Flag and the ettiquette of the Flag. Each morning they were required to attend Flag Raising ceremonies

and in the evening Flag Retreat, thus gi\ mg each girl an opportunity to participate in proper ceremonies of Americanism. The food was superb, they reported. everyone congenial and helpful and a wealth of information gained. The Auxiliary is most proud of these young women who gave and appreciated the opportunity to attend Hoosie r Girls' State. In further business of the evening. more definite plans were made for the Flea Market. Craft Sale and Bake Sale which is to be held on August 21 at the Post Home. The members were reminded that this activity is open to anyone to display their items. The Chaplain and President participated in draping the Unit's Charter in memory of two of its members. Stella Erickson and Beryl Brown. The Unit's membership drive is on and members were urged to renew their membership as the first drive for the American Legion Auxiliary ends on Knightstown Day in September when The American Legion and Auxiliary meet at Knightstown Home for the annual Home Day picnic. Mrs. Charles Hill, Vice-Presi-dent, and Mrs. Wardman attended a School of Instruction at Lakeville where officers and chairmen of the American Legion Auxiliary instructed those present, in the proper procedures of an officer and the possibilities available for a chairman. Public Relation and Leadership were two of the chairmanships discussed and then relat-

Birthdays and Historical events for the month of August were read with a partial listing as: Francis Scott Key, Composer, born on August 1; Columbus sailed on August 3, 1492: Music Week on the steps of the Capital; August. 1939. World War II began; World War II and Vietnam War both ended in August. The meeting closed with tnv Chaplain giving a special prayer in memory of those who served in the wars.
