W.E.M.S.A. NEWS Bv Joyce Cook Ah, Glorious Fourth of July! Parades ami picnics, fun and friends, and of course, fireworks. Th^re are a great many types of “fireworks" legally available in Walkerton, all intended for your enjoyment. But please be careful. Supervise children (even the older ones). Keep the fireworks in an area where there's no chance of starting a fire. Make sure you know what you’re dealing with. Even the most innocent looking device can prove dangerous if handled improperly. Everyone’s favorite, the "sparkler", makes an impressive sight when tossed high into the air. But, too often, the wire is left sticking in the ground for someone to step on barefoot the next day; or to be run over with the lawnmower; or worse yet, hitting another person before it gets to the ground. Fumes, cinders and ashes

present respiratory problems and eye injuries every year. So please take all possible precautions. For the local fireworks display by the Fire Department, WEMSA will have both ambulance units at the park. Just remember to stay well back, and to protect your eyes. It has been a busy month for WEMSA. In addition to setting up schedules and personnel for the Bozo Tank and card games at the carnival. WEMSA has also participated in the Koont Lake Festival. Diane Schmeltz, Barb Dill and Larry McClean manned Unit Two at the 10-kilometer race. WEMSA is pleased to welcome two new volunteer drivers for the daytime shift. Brian Cassady, a member of the Walkerton Police Department, is with us now. And Walkerton’s own. very capable Mike “Shag" Laizuer gives up some of his time to help out. At WEMSA’s business meeting last Monday night, it was decided that, since our training meetings are becoming increasingly informa-

tive and interesting, these meetings will be opened to attendence from other services. At the next meeting, the third Wednesday in July, guest speakers from all the area hospitals' emergency rooms will answer questions concerning ER procedures, patient packaging, use of paramedics, and other topics of concern to ambulance personnel. With a greater understanding of hospitals’ preferences and procedures, patient care can be even more improved. Darryl Eddinger was voted “Member of the Month". Be sure to look for our “spotlight" on him in next week’s issue. BETTER HOMES CLUB ENJOYS PICNIC The Better Homes Extension Club got rained out from the picnic on Monday late afternoon, but didn’t let the rain dampen their spirits. They gathered at the home of their president. Mrs. Albert Ray. Twelve members and two guests. Mrs. Nedra Smith and Mrs. Sharon Lowry, enjoyed the delicious pot luck meal. Mrs. Leigh Roy Hahn. Sr., gave the dinner prayer. A contest was done immediately following the meal. A very tricky thing trying to find safety pins in a bowl of rice. Mrs. Ray and Mrs. Low ry tied for the win. Our business meeting was conducted by Mrs. Ray. Mrs. Richard Ruby show ed us some crafts we can make during the year. Also she passed a paper for hostess and hostesses to sign up for the year beginning with August. Get-well cards were signed for Wayne Cover and Ida Mae Watkins. The club will attend the Wagon Wheel Playhouse on August 31 to see "Sound Os Music". Get your $5.50 to Mrs. Ruby as soon as possible so tickets can be purchased. Tickets and money are to be turned in to Mrs. Allen Eddinger for the quilt that will be given at the St. Joseph County 4-H Fair. //GUTTERS DAMAGED?V Coll 2SS-7719 VANDERHEYDEN _ lAVtSTROUGH soviet U | Dr? Roll call was the telling of a current event which proved to be quite interesting. The Hiatts had been to the Worlds Fair, Mrs. Ruby’s home was struck by lightning and an accident happened at Walnut and State Road 23 while someone was coming to the picnic, for some of the events. The song of the month was sung and Mrs. Ruby closed the meeting with the reading “Didn’t Have Time". It gave us all a thought to what we do with our precious time given to us. We all enjoyed the game Lotto and many prizes were won. Mrs. Lowry won the door prize. Mrs. Ray, president; Mrs. Ruby, vice-president; Mrs. Hahn, secretary; and Mrs. Eddinger, treasurer, will be the new officers for 1982-83. They will attend the officers meeting at the fairgrounds Wednesday morning, June 30. Mrs. Harold Eddinger, past president, presented Mrs. Ray with her president's pin and wished her well in her two years as president. The next meeting will be held on August 23. There will be no meet-
