NEAR PERFECT LAVILLE DROPS FALCONS 57-46 I he laVille lancers showed the John Glenn Falcons about as strong of man-to-man defense as the Fai cons could ever see and added to this with a precision-perfect offense for the entire first half and well into the second half Wednesdas night to dash any hopes the Falcons had of advancing on in the 1982 state tourney. The display bv the lancers was so tremendous they completely took the Falcons out of the game earls and despite a late fourth quarter rush by Glenn, it was stricktls the Lancers' night. The loss had to be really heartbreaking for both the boys and their coach Gordon Mosson. who had to hope for so much in the final fling of what has been a tensionfilled late season. However, it was just not to be as coach Larry Radecki had his Lancers tuned to the finest for this match-up. the rubber game of three between the two old rivals this year. The Falcons bossed out with a 14-8 record overall. 3-1 under Mosson. who we feel should he given consideration for the head coaching position this year if he is interested. His job with the Junior Varsity all year long and taking over the varsity in the last week of the season surely rates consideration. The details of how this game was played offer very little except a very strong "belly-to-belly" man-to-man defense by La Ville and their precision passing game against a fairly good Falcon man-to-man. only to have the patience of the Lancers continue to get the good shot and lake advantage of it. The fact they hit their first six attempts from the floor just added to what w as an almost perfect first half and after one they led by 13-6. but had opened this to 27-10 at the main intermission. Only Mike Arnett seemed to be willing to challenge the Lancers as the Falcons, despite better ball movement the last three games, just couldn't get any flow into their offense and after so much of this, reverted back to some of their poor judgement passing thev have displayed for sometime. Arnett had three baskets. Phil Groves one and Jex? Harness one at the main intermission while the Lancers had five boys share their first 15 points with six pretty well splining their points in the first half. The Falcons showed a little more intensity in the third quarter as it was "do or die time" from the start of the second half. However, even though they were able to get a little offense going, LaVille was still picking to pieces the defense for good shots and after a better Glenn third quarter, the Falcons still trailed 41-22. Then came the real charge. A full court pressure, sometimes getting a little too physical perhaps, but certainly a detense that forced the action began to get the Falcons back in the game. At no time through the first three stanzas had any kind of a spurt been put on with only back-to-back baskets by Arnett and Groves around the three minute mark of the third quarter the only time Glenn got more than two points together at any time. LaVille hit the first two points of the final stanza, a pair of Brian Allen free throws, but Mark Jacobson and Groves came back with nice lay-ins. After Terry Adkins hit another two free throws. Mike Atiken hit two baskets from under and Arnett added two more points from the charity stripe This cut the lead to 45-32 and did generate some crowd support as the pressure was causing LaVille a few problems. After Adkins again dropped in two of his high arching free throws, the clock showing 3:55 left. Jacobson hit two one pointers and Arnett
then hit two more baskets in an eight sei ond span, thanks to a turnover under the basket on the inbounds pass. Harness was fouled shortly alter and the senior forward hit his two shots and all of a sudden, in just over a minute's time, the Falcons had cut the lead to seven. 4’ 40 and had the place jumping. A couple of timeouts by LaVille finally got the 1 ancers settled down a little and the Radecki strategy went to work on the severe press the Lancers were facing from Glenn. Os course fouls were being committed, and Allen hit two more from the 15 foot line with 2:28 show ing to break the 8 point Falcon surge I hen after LaVille regained possession again on a missed Glenn shot, their famous four-corn-ers went into motion and with three Falcons pressing hard, it was just a matter of time until their skillful ballhandlers found the open man. First it was Adkins for a lay-in, and then after regaining the ball again, it was Ken Carbiener. By this time, with these six points, it was all over even though Glenn was to come back with three more baskets before the final gun. Down and outplayed, yes, but the Falcons never quit in what had to be an embarrasing game for them to take as well. The Lancers had a fine 19 point performance by Adkins topping their offense. He had double figure help from Allen, with 13. and Carbiener with 10. Once again Groves did a good job of keeping Rich Whiteman from getting his floor shooting going. A 16 point performance on seven of nine shooting plus two free throws by Arnett paced the Falcons and Groves chipped in with 10 for the other double figure total. One encouraging note was that juniors Aitken and Jacobson had eight and six in the stretch drive and were big parts of the comeback attempt. It was rather sad to see this class of seniors bow out on a performance like this, but the fans of Glenn have had three years of watching part of them and two of most of the others as eight boys finished their high school careers in this, truly a Lancer show.
