Falcons Top Bobcats In 81-County Oregon Davis coach Dan Warkcntien put all his eggs in one basket at the end of the game and gambled on a late shot to overhaul the John Glenn Falcons in their first round game of the BiCounty Tourney. After a nip-and-tuck. back and forth bailgame. Warkcntien called for the Bobcats to hold the ball until the final 10 seconds and go for the shot that would give the Bobcats a 47-46 lead if successful. The strategy backfired, however. as Dennis Cooper got around the first wave of defense, took a rather off-balance 16 fiwt jumper with :0“ showing on the clock that missed, took a long rebound, and then the hopes of the upset of the Falcons dimmed when James Egger was called for a foul on the rebound. taking awa\ any chance for a second shot by the young Cats. pair of John Harness free throws with four seconds left, iced it up and gave Glenn a 49-4 b victory in a game that easily could have gone either way. The victory for coach Jim Waller’s crew was their fifth in seven games and advanced them to the semi-final round of the annual BiCounty meet against the host LaVille Lancers on Friday night. The heartbreaking loss for OregonDavis, was their eighth in 13 games this season. Glenn, who definately had to be the pre-season favorite in this meet, but who has not been very busy or consistent so far this season. used a very strong game around the boards by Jeff Tinkey and some baseline shooting by Mike Arnett and Jim Dreessen to take this victory away from the underclassmen squad of O-D. With three sophomores and two juniors in the starting Ime-up. and more south on the team, future prospects for the Bobcats look good, but that takes little from the pain of the
defeat in their first-ever Bi-County tourney game as the replacement for the former North Liberty school. The Falcons looked early like they might blow it open, an explosion that many Falcon fans have been expecting but hasn't really materialized this season. Arnett opened the scoring with a 12 footer from the side over the zone and Tinkey took a nice Arnett pass for a lay-in. After David Quick got the Bobcats on the board after two minutes, Phil Groves tried to lob a pass under the basket which went very cleanly through the net for a score. A lay-in by Egger was followed by seven fast Falcon points, a three point play by Dreessen on a rebound lay-in, a tip by Arnett and a two handed stuff by Mike Elkin after an O D turnover and lead pass gave him a third of the court alone. However, this 13-4 lead with just over two minutes left, found the Falcons sticking on that number for some time- as the Cats came scratching back. They got five before the quarter ended for a 13-9 score after one. One of two free throw s by Cooper opened the second stanza and after Elkin got a driving lay-in. the Cats hit three straight baskets, one by Mark Abel and two by Cooper for their first lead of the game, 16-15. From here on out until halftime, it was back and forth with the Falcons scoring the final two baskets of the half to take a 26-24 lead at the main intermission. The Cats never led in the third quarter, but the score was tied three times at 30. 32 and 34, before Tinkey and Arnett hit back-to-back to open a lead again that the Falcons managed to hold onto until the quarter ended at 39-38. The final stanza didn’t have much scoring as the play was cautious, with neither team trying to speed up the tempo and working
for the better percentage shots. A 12 footer by Cooper opened the period, but Arnett swished one from medium range on the right baseline. Two Egger baskets then put the Bobcats back on top by three. 44-41. but after Arnett tallied from a similar spot on the other side, the Cats again grabbed a three-point lead with a Cooper 20 footer. This came with 5:05 left in the game and was to be their final score of the night as a couple of key turnovers later in their deliberate play, cost them dearly. Tinkey continued to be the hardest working Falcon with a tip in at the 4:47 mark that pulled them within one, and then with 4:02 showing, put the Falcons up again with a lay-in from the right side. This was to be the last scoring until Harness hit the two free throws to cinch the game. The Cats played very cautious, but the turnovers hurt, and Glenn missed a couple of opportunities to increase the lead also. A timeout with 57 seconds left, was when the instruction was given to run the clock down to :10 and go for it. w hich is now history. The Cats did call two time-outs before Harness shot his free throws to try and bother him. but the senior forward rolled both of them in. but they did go in to ice it up. Tinkey led the Falcons with 17 as he played a very good all-round game in this battle. His overall plav was the difference, with good board work that resulted in most of his points. Dreessen hit 10 for the other Falcon in double figures. A trio of Bobcats were in double figures. Cooper leading the way with 14 w hile Egger and Quick each had 10 for the losers.
