LEGISLATURE IN SESSION The Indiana General Assembly is in their annual session now in Indianapolis. According to law in Indiana, this is the year for the “short term”. Until the early 1970’5, Indiana’s legislature only met every other year, certainly not sufficient to take care of the business of running the state properly as easily proved to be the case in the last 10 years or so of such a setup. Then the law was changed, and the legislators now meet ► every year, with the even numbered years being the “short session”, or 30 working days. They held one of these days in late 1981 to organize and then officially went to work on Tuesday, January 5. This does not leave a lot of time for legislators to get their job done even though the short sessions do not carry as heavy a load as the long sessions, the one in which the budget is a matter of extreme importance that always seems to get shoved into the last couple of days. However. 1982, despite being a short session, will be an important one, much of it will be of current problems and much to form patterns of what might be expected a little further down the road now that the federal government, under their cut-back programs, is pushing more and more responsibility back to the states for programs that before were federally assisted or funded and controlled. This will present the Indiana lawmakers with some headaches, as money is not only going to be tight, it is simply non-existent in some cases and the problems have simply been shifted from federal to state levels. One thing we can say in our immediate area, we do have a very sincere representation for our immediate area with Senator V. Richard Miller (R-Plymouth) our senator and the two representatives who represent us in our immediate area and to the surrounding area east, south and west of us, Richard Mangus (R-Lakeville) and Edward Cook (D-Plymouth) as our chosen representatives. All three of these men are sincere and will listen to their constituents. This is a quality that is good and not always found in government today. have in this issue, on page 7, a questionnaire of Sen. Miller's that can be filled out, additional comments put with it and sent to him in Indianapolis. If the representatives also choose to use a questionnaire this year and we are supplied with it, it will also appear in our columns, but time is of importance in returning or making comments or telephone calls to our legislators in a short session. We want to encourage all interested taxpayers and citizens to be concerned, this is your government and on the state level more decisions are made that affects you day in and day out than on any other level. We will also publish the telephone numbers where calls can be made as soon as all this is put together, as this early in the session news out of the state capital has been just a Ittle slow coming. Just don’t forget, these men are your voices and they can only reflect your views if they know what they are. Be concerned and be aware of the happenings of the indiana General Assembly this and every year. You will also want to keep in mind, this is an election year again for all representatives, a matter that certainly will be put before us time and time again before November. WHEN...
