Falcons Halt Argos Streak At 76 Games The John Glenn Falcons used gcxxl balanced team plav with the two guards contributing excellent ball games Ihursday night to put an end to the state's longest unbeaten streak in regular season play as Argos was knocked from the ranks of the undefeated SR-50. Fht victory, Glenn s third in four games, came in the opening round of the ( ulver Holiday Tourney and put an end to a victors streak that started back in 1978. The Argos streak in that length of time became a real bonafide super effort for a school of any size as in the same period of time the Dragons not onlv defeated everyone on their schedule and in the Culver Holiday Tourney, but the usually strong BiCounty Tourney at LaVille as well. Add to it they won four sectional titles at Plymouth, won some outstanding games at Regional and Semi-State level and made one appearance in the final four for an overall 93-4 record in that span And there was no doubt that (his was the year it was going to happen. It was just a matter of time and who as despite the usual fine coaching, the discipline and

patience the Dragon team has. they just don't have the horses this season in their school of less than 3(X) students in the upper four grades. The fitting thing as mans looked at it was for either Glenn, who has the most blemishes by Argos in this streak, or LaVille, the team that gave the Dragons some super close battles onlv to come away empty-handed, be the team that would turn the trick. The Falcons trailed onlv once in this game and despite some of the best ball-handling and discipline they have displayed in years, they still rather fell into the Dragons pattern and didn't really get their normal style of game going with the size, speed and depth on the bench. However, with Phil Groves and Mike Arnett leading the wav, they managed to control the game and in the late stages used some fine free throw sh<x>ting to ice it up as they hit 16 out of 19 m the final stanza as Argos made their strong bid late in the game that found them forced to foul for possession. The Dragons scored first as Kim Fdmonds got a lay-in after more than a minute passed, but the Falcons then ran off 10 straight points to take a lead they were never to lose. Jeff Tinkey started hot. getting Glenn's first two baskets on shots just a few feet away from the basket and Groves
popped an IK footer before Tinkey got a solo lav-in on a last break. Arnett was next with a 16 looter from the side as the two guards again were showing that the Falcons have some punch from outside other than reiving on their great size advantage underneath Reserve Dave Tuttle hit two free throws to break the Glenn streak but the Dragons were able to only get three baskets in this opening quarter and Glenn moved to a 15-11 first period lead. 1 he second peritxi found the play streaky as Arnett and Jim Dreessen got the first two baskets for Glenn before Argos came back with five unanswered points However, the 19-16 score was as dose as they were going to get all night as the Falcons came back with seven straight as Argos had a two-and-a hall minute drv spell. The half ended up 30-22 Glenn, and the Fai cons had dominated play in addition to the fact that one could see that the Argos scoring was going to be pretty well limited to the Edmonds twins and their onlv returning starter this year. Scott Jenn ings. Ihe Falcons were really crowding Jennings to further add to the offensive blues of the Dragons who totaled only seven baskets and eight free throws in the opening half. I hen came the real breaking point The third quarter found neither team able to do anything offensively. Joe Harness, the Falcons leading scorer, got his first basket of the game on a short shot 40 seconds into the third quarter and neither team scored until Harness hit again as the quarter was almost half gone. Argos got their first points over a minute later when a steal and solo lav in by Boyd Hollabuagh broke a real dry spell for them. Harness and Groves then hit from medium and long range to raise the score to 38 24 before Argos found range with Jennings hitting from II foot at the 1:26 mark. In a game that had fewer errors than Glenn fans are used to seeing in the first half, the third quarter was rather poorlv placed with just six baskets be tween the two teams and Glenn held a commanding 38-26 lead heading into the fourth period. The Dragons had onlv nine baskets in 24 minutes of play, certainly not the caliber of scoring they have displaced in recent years. The fourth and final quarter turned out to be one of those that doesn't offer the most in basketball excitement, a lot of free throw shooting. The Falcons, very content to move the ball around the outside, did manage to pick up a lot of fouls as the Dragons, while not being rough or dirts, did commit a lot of personals in their attempts to regain possession in their comeback attempt In fact, so cautious was (ilenn that they only took a few shots in this quarter while Argos was letting flv freely from anywhere within range The teams traded four points each before a Glenn dry spell let the Dragons really get back in the ball game. 1 railing 42-30 after a pair of Arnett free throws with 6 40 left, (ilenn wasn t to score again until Groves hit a pair of one-pointers more than three minutes later. In this time, the Dragons ran off eight straight points as each of the Edmonds twins accounted for four I his made the score 42-38. but after Groves two free throws broke the drv spell. Kip Edmonds hit again from the left corner and I tnkev got his first points since early in the first quarter, a big three point plav on a rebound lav in and foul This came with 2:2” left and opened the gap to 7 again to force the Dragons more than ever to press or defense and commit more louis Glenn was to onlv score from the foul line after this, but the nine late free throws were more than enough to bring home the 58-50 victors de spite the flCt that ArgOS made more baskets in this quarter than they had the first three. 10 to be exact

Arnett and Groves were the real leaders in this game. They ran the show well, handled the hall on the exterior as good as (ilenn ever docs and led in points with 16 and 14 respectively . They had double figure help from Imkev. with 11. and Harness with 10, both mainly in short streaks Glenn also held a board advantage over the much shorter Dragons. Ihe losers were paced bv Kim Edmonds with 16. ten in the first half and six in the last quarter. Brother Kip had 13, most of them in the final quarter splurge. Jennings also totaled I J. for 42 of the Dragons 50 points among these three.
