hall team Friday night several things were very obvious: 1. The Falcons played their strongest and biggest opponent on their schedule in their first game of the season; 2. The Falcons are going to win an awful lot of basketball games on the strength of their balance, size

and aggressive style; 3. They have all the parts needed. but they didn't work as a unit in the opening game of the year; 4. Any team with discipline, at least if the opening game is an earmark, can penetrate the overanxious and pressing Falcon defense for easy lay-ins. especially if they have one or two good ball handling guards. The net result of the opening game was a 71-64 Clay victory over Glenn in a game that wasn't nearly as close as the final score indicated and a game that found entirely too much one-on-one offense for the Falcons against a team effort of Clay, who was content to pass the ball until the open man was spotted. In fact, with the hot shooting John Meyer basically the only Colonial who hit from the floor, the Clay team racked up a better than 50 percent shooting percentage using the cripples ami lay-ins as basically (heir only weapon. Meyer hit four shots of more than 10 fixit in his super-hot first half and only a nine-footer by Jim Sarabyn in the last quarter was the only other shot the Clay team made over seven or eight foot all night. The Colonials really put the pressure on the Falcons early as they took command of the game with some very hot shooting while Glenn wasn’t able to connect on their first nine shots from the floor. It was Meyer. Sarabyn. Meyer. Sarabyn and Meyer in a row in the first 3:18 to grab a 10-0 lead before Mark Jacobson, coming off the bench, got the Falcons first two points on free throws. Another Meyer basket was followed by one of two more by Jacobson from the line and after Meyer tipped in a missed Colonial shot, big Mike Elkin got Glenn’s first basket of the season on a tip-in with 2:32 left in the quarter. He got a second one to drop, but the two teams just traded points until the first quarter ended 20-11 Clay, with Meyer having seven of seven from the fireld. This is about the way the game was to stas Meyer hit his first 10 shots of the night and added two free throw s in the second quarter to have 24 at halftime as the visitors managed to maintain leads ranging from seven all the way up to 16 points. A brief splurge by Mike Arnett late in the half, as he scored eight unanswered points, cut the lead to 35-27 before Clay got three baskets in the last 1:04 to make it 41 -27 at halftime. The pattern had been set and it was to continue that way m the third quarter as no noticeable changes were made at halftime to alter the Falcons plans. The

margin was spread to 55-38 late in the third quarter before Elkin hit two quickies and Arnett one in the last 1:05 to pull Glenn within 11. 55-44 after three. However, for all practical purposes. it was over except for playing out the time. Clay opened the last stanza with a pair of Meyer baskets and one by Mark Gorski to make it 61-44 with less than six minutes to go before Glenn broke into the scoring column. The Falcons then were able to cut the lead to a more respectable seven point margin late in the game as Clay used the bench pretty freely and the play really got rough and loose as three intentional fouls were called in the final minutes, making it more like a combat zone than a basketball floor in the closing minutes. The game almost got away from the officials, but luckily enough, no real incidents occured as Glenn scored nine of the last 11 points to cut the final margin to 71-64. The only place Clay showed a weakness at all in this game was at the free throw line. They managed to make only 7 of 21 free throws on the night while Glenn managed to hit 18 out of 29 for the night. However. the Falcons mediocre field goal shixiting of around 33 percent made up the difference. Meyer End* With 32 Big John Meyer topped all scorers with 32 points as he had just a superb night for the winners. He had double figure help from the rest of the big front line as Sarabyn collected 16 and Gorski 12 for the victors. Mike Elkin and Mike Arnett each had 1" for the losers and Joe Harness hit double figures with 13. 10 coming in the late stages for Glenn. B-Team Loses 58-45 she Clay B-Team made the night a sweep for the visitors with a 58-45 victory over the Falcons. Spencer Wilcox and Mike Aitken had 13 and 11 to lead Glenn while Rich Sutherland had a game high 17 and Dean Oxley 12 for the victors.
