On Thursday night, the John Glenn girls volleyball team won the Oregon-Davis Sectional title. They first met the Knox girls, who they had split two decisions with this season and who were the winners of the Walkerton Invitational a few weeks ago. Glenn won over Knox in straight games 15-9 and 15-12. For Glenn Julie Knowlton had the best serving accuracy with a perfect 12 for 12 while Tammy Miller had a 3.0 serving rating. A total of 8 kills for Barb Peacock led the spikers and Michele Vicsik had a 1.8 passing rating to lead in that department. This boosted Glenn's record to 10-11 and Knox bowed out with a fine 19-6 mark. It was then wait and see and after the second match found North Judson coming out on top. the Lady Falcons met the Blue Jays in a late night contest. Glenn won by scores of 14-12 and 15-2 to w rap up the title. Julie Knowlton again had the best sening accuracy with 14 of 14 w hile Julie Cline led with a 3.0 quality rating. Barb Peacock again was the leading spiker. this time getting 11 kills and she also had the best passing rating at 2.66. Ihe Glenn record going into Saturday Regional action at South Bend Adams against Ph mouth, is 11 11. Falcons Win (continued from page 1) 12 Passes Completed 5 2 Had Intercepted 2 Return Yards 75 1 Punts 3 22 Average Yards 27 6 Fumbles 3 4 Fumbles Lost 3 37 Yards Penalized 35 60 Offensive Plays 42 The game was just underway when one of those happenings you never want to see occured, an injured plaser After returning the opening Glenn kickoff to their own 40 yard line and hitting a pass for four yards and picking up seven on a run. the quarterback suffered a knee injurs on a first down play as he was hit behind the line of scrimmage After the lengthy delay. Doug Brock was replaced as the signal caller by Mike Dorion, and Dorion pitched back to tailback Larry Hall who lofted a long pass to
Dorton as he moved out of the backfield. He pulled it in and ran the rest of the way untouched for an overall 52 yard pass and run touchdown. Bill Davis kicked the extra point and it was quickly 7-0 after just 2:08 had expired in the game. The Falcons then began to grind out the yards in a matter the fans have been accustomed to seeing this year. With three first downs on nine plays, eight on the ground, they moved inside the Rebels 20 yard line before a Jeff O'Connor fumble was covered by Dorton and the drive was stopped. Then the two teams exchanged punts on their next possession with the Rebels getting possession the third time only to have the next two plays find Kelly Cordell recovering a South Newton fumble and then a Jeff Fansler pass was intercepted to keep the ball moving from one team to the other. Glenn forced another punt and the Falcons, now in the second quarter put the ball in play from their own 19 yard line. On the first play O'Connor broke through the line behind the blocking of Kerry Lichtenbarger and Rod Lowry to break into the secondary and then he turned on the after burners. In all it was an 81 yard scamper as the fleet senior tailback put the Falcons right back in the hall game. Kevin Phelps kicked the extra point and the score was tied at 7 all. This certainly put momentum on the Falcons side and the second quarter later turned out to be the ball game. On the first play after the kickoff. Jeff Tinkey intercepted a Dorton pass and returned it to the South Newton 43 where another scoring drive started. It was O'Connor for four and then three and a pass from Jeff Fansler to Tinkey for seven and a first dow n. O'Connor was hit for a two yard loss, but Fansler and I inkey teamed up two plavs in a row for six and then 25 yards for the touchdown and the Glenn lead. Phelps again kicked the point after and with 5:55 showing on the dock it was 14-7, a lead that Glenn wasn't going to loss again, but was to be threatened late in the contest. I he f alcon defense, really tight after the opening scries shocker scoring pass, was doing its job in fine shape. They again forced a
punt and this short 24 yarder gave the ball back to the Falcons at their own 48. From here it was six plays and 52 yards, with a big Fansler to Tinkey pass again the key play for 24 yards. Fansler then hit tight end Mike Aitken with a 10 yarder to complete the drive as Glenn jumped to a 21-7 lead with Phelps line-drive extra point kick. An interception by Fansler stopped any thoughts South Newton had of getting on the board again before halftime and after Glenn got the ball they did gain 20 yards on a Tinkey to Aitken pass, but time ran out in the half with them at the Rebels 38 yard line. The visiting Rebels from Kentland certainly were not quitters, but they were being handled pretty well by the Falcons in the trenches and Glenn dominated play in the first quarter and a half of the second half. After the opening kickoff, they moved to the 22 where Phelps missed a 39 yard field goal attempt, the only field goal he has missed this year but also his longest attempt. It was back and forth through the rest of the third quarter with the Falcons taking possession late in the period on a Cordell recovery of another Rebel fumble, this time at the 14. It was five plays and 14 yards even though there was a five yard delay penaltyjust before the quarter ended against Glenn. However. Fansler to Tinkey made that five back and Mike Elkin plowed over from two yards out on the first play of the last quarter for the final Glenn touchdown. Phelps again kicked the point and it was 28-7, a comfortable cushion at that time. Another Rebel fumble was covered by Wade Boise for Glenn, but Fansler had a pass picked off by a good defensive play on the part of Brian Deno. However, the Falcon defense was still ascerting themselves and South Newton turned the ball over on downs at their own 48 with time getting to be an important matter. On the next series of downs, coach Hostrawser began to use some of his reserves and also moving into the picture was a heavy fog starting to envelope the field. After getting as far as the Rebels 32 yard line, a fumble that the fog helped hide, either on the snap or attempted handoff, found an unidentified Rebel defender picking

up the ball and running out of the fog and the pack for a 42 yard return and a first and 10 at the John Glenn 26 yard line. It took four plays, one a 12 yard scamper by Hall, a face mask penalty and finally a little flip from Dorton to Brian Deno for the score with 2:23 left in the game. However, the tide changed slightly when the same combination teamed up for a two point pass conversion and it was now 28-15. As expected, an onside kick was attempted and it was successful, hounding off a forward wall man for Glenn and being covered by the hustling Dorton. Hall broke free for nine yards on the first play and then Dorton lofted a long pass in the heavy fog that the Falcons defense just couldn't see, only to have the speedy Deno follow it out. gather it in and race in the end zone for a 35 yard scoring play. This really brought the crowd to their feet even though most of them couldn't sec the pass completion, just the TD indication. On an attempted kick, a fumbled snap resulted in the holder getting creamed trying to run and it was suddenly 28-21 with 1:36 left to play. Then came one of the big plays that gets little attention. Another onside kick was tried and Joe Lai/ure managed to cover the free bouncing ball to insure the victory as the Falcons were now in the position of being able to run out the clock with South Newton having only one timeout left. It was three runs into the line and the ball game from here. Despite the tight final score, the
