Practice Starts for 500
Daily practice in preparation for the 65th annual Indianapolis 500 Mile Race on May 24 will atart Satur day with rookie drivers expected to provide much of the track action. Twenty six without previous experience in an Indianapolis race, the largest group in recent years, are ready to challenge their veteran rivals headed by seven former win ners who have been victorious in 15 of the last 20 events. Saturday's schedule will begin with the mayor’s "500" breakfast at the Indianapolis Convention ('enter, followed by traditional opening day ceremonies at the start finish line. From then until 6 p m., the track will be open to all cars and drivers meeting the requirements of the sanctioning United States Auto Club. Gate admission will be Si. Six more days of practice also are scheduled prior to the first day of official time trials on May 9 to deter mine front row starling positions on Race Day behind the Buick Regal V 6 pace car And the practice days are expected to be packed with action because only eight of the rookies have been approved in advance by ÜBAC on the basia of their experience in championship events at other tracks.
