CABLE TV PROPOSALS T ? ble w “ C'"* know " “ Community Antenna Television (CATV). This system brought television to areas that otherwise did not receive television signals This was done by building an antenna which was larger than anything which could be put on a viewer’s house. The antenna was shared by subscribers; hence the Community Antenna Television. The first system was built in Oregon in the 1940’s and bv the mid-1960’s there were 640 systems in the United States serving 650,000 subscribers. At the end of 1980 there were over 17 million subscribers. The cable television service is no longer based simply on the lack of reception but the public’s desire for a greater variety of communications services as well as much improved reception Not only can subscribers receive a variety in programming but also specially services such as children’s programming, sports performing arts, etc. Rooftop antennas are costly and unsightly. With cable teleision there is no need for your rooftop antenna. Cable television is fed into your home through lines such as your phone is connected and attached to your television. Optional services require a converter to expand your VHF channels. A local business office will be established for signing up of subscribers, paying of bills or reporting of any trouble with your cable service. With Cable Television your reception will not be marred by signal disruption from distance, terrain and interference. Instead a cable system tower is erected, usually 100-650 feet high, located outside the city away from the normal sources of electrical interference and other disturbances. The signals are then carried down into an equipment building (called a headend) via coaxial cables lashed to the side of the tower and then out to the community. A tower can have from up to 40 different antennas which receive local and distant television stations. Submitted to the Walkerton Town Board (and similar if not identical to North Liberty) were five proposals for cable television service and following is a summary of the five franchise proposals.
