MARCH IS MEMBERSHIP MONTH AT M.S.D.C. "The Marshall-Starke Development Center (MSDC) annual membership drive is underway and will continue through the month of March," according to Linda Bhx’m. chairperson of the Communitv Membership Committee. "Membership offers the commun its at large the opportunity to get involved with an organization dedicated to giving mentally retarded and other developmentally disabled citizens their rightful opportunits for growth and meaningful lives." MSDC provides comprehensive services to individuals who have mans kinds of handicaps, including mental retardation, cerebral palss. epilepsv, physical impairments, speed delays and impediments, etc. Sers ices include information and referral assistance; diagnostic and evaluation services; children s programs in the form of an infant homebound program (ages 0-2) and a developmental preschixil program (ages 3-4); vocational evaluation. work adjustment, job placement. sheltered employment; skills training to teach self-sufficiency and independence; speech therapy; phssical therapy; client and family counseling; recreation, etc. Citizens of Marshall and Starke Counties who feel MSDC services might be beneficial to them, a member of their family, or an acquaintance, should contact MSDC for detailed information about the Center’s programs and services. Upon contact, the Social Worker will gather information in order to determine if the services provided by MSDC or any other community agency will best serve the individual’s needs. When services from other sources are deemed appropriate to the individual’s requirements. information will be provided to the individual and referral to that source will then be made. When MSDC can provide appropriate services, the intake process begins. The intake consists of a home visit by the Social Worker and a visit to the Center by the potential client to enable other staff to gather social, psychological, medical, educational and vocational information, and do diagnostic and evaluative testing to determine appropriate placement to ensure the most effective program. The Center is located at 1901 PIDCO Drive in Plymouth in a 28.000 square foot structure which has housed all MSDC programs since October. 1976. and presently provides services to over 120 area citizens. "MSDC began in 1965 with only a handful of members and support from the two-county area has increased steadily. Last year's membership drive was successful in reaching its goal of 250 members. and this year we would like to double that." Bloom stated. She said that for (he handicapped of the community to continue receiving the assistance they need, the support and interest of all the community is of utmost importance. "Through your tax deductible membership in the MSDC you can be a catalyst for the directions the (enter will take now and in the future.
