Late LaVille Basket Wins Thriller 54-53 Brian Allen hasn't scored a lot ot baskets in his I aVille basketball career, but certainly one he scored from 14 f<KH with just three seconds remaining Friday night will be the highlight of his career for some time. The shot, by the man I .aVille didn't particularly want shooting the ball, ended the battle tor an outright conference crown for the Falcons and now leaves the title up to three games with lower ranked teams to decide whether the Fai cons and the Lancers will share the crown or one or the other will win it outright LaVille has North Liberty and New Prairie left on the next two Fridax nights while Glenn will have wrapped up its conference play by publication time with .1 Tuesday night game at Culver. We have long felt two things, one (hat Larry Radecki can get more out of high school boys than any coach in the Northern State Conference and is on a par with Phil Wey bright at Argos in the small school circles. Second, that Jim Gibbons just is not a good consistent official Both facts were brought out in this game. LaVille overcame two factors, some p<x»r officiating that found the breaks slanting Glenn's way on several occasions, and one of the best performances the Falcons have given this year to win the 54 S 3 thriller Friday night. LaVille opened the game with their usual accurate and fine passing and unselfish style and simply tore up a Falcon man-to-man defense that was just made for LaVille's strong inside game. With pinpoint passes finiding the open man in close, it was simply no contest despite the fact the Falcons were playing with a lot more intensity and discipline than on many occasions. LaVille also, basically, stopped Glenn from run ning. a style that is dcfinatrlv what Glenn needs to do to be successful The Lancers jumped to a 5-0 lead on a 12 footer by Rich Whiteman and a three point lay-in on a foul by Allen Jeff Tinkey got free for a lay in for Glenn, but the two teams traded points until Joe Harness hit

a three-point play on a driving short shot at the 2:42 mark Hou ever, this was followed by an Allen basket and after Brian Parker hit one of two tree throws, reserve Ken ( arbiener hit two straight baskets subbing for the talented ( raig Miller who had picked up two quick fouls and it was LaVille 14. Glenn I 2 after one peruxi I he pattern continued into and through the second quarter ( Henn stayed in their man-to-man and LaVille, regardless of who was in the game, continued to penetrate it with their patience and alert pass mg. They continued to lead by as much as II with Glenn never get ting closer than eight, and by hall time it was 35-2". the lancers in command. For I aVille. ( arbiener had come off the bench and mixed it up With the much bigger Falcons underneath to score six baskets and paced their attack with 12 points. I inkev had eight of Glenn s points with Mike Flkin getting six and even though I aVille was leading on their fine shot selection and plav. the Falcons were showing dominance on the boards with their size and muscle advantage. The second half was a little dis ferent. Glenn altered their defense and went to a zone using a half court press and putting a lot of pressure on the guards out front. This did slow down the lancer offense on occasion, but what hurt them most was some quick foul calls early in the second half that put the Falcons in the one-and -one very early. Despite these facts, I aVille continued to dominate ear ly Terry Adkins opened with a pair of free throws and Miller followed with a short baseline jumper. Parker hit one of two from the line again as Glenn was having some free throyy problems which eventually proved fatal They missed several key attempts in the first half as well which would have tightened the game up considerably . Flkin put a rebound back up and in. but Miller, with his good moves, got another lax in Parker put a rebound back up and in as he and f Ikm were reallx crashing the boards, sometimes almost too in tenslx. but they were getting away with it Miller scored again on a lay tn and was called for a charge and Harness followed up with a
lax in at the 4:1" mark to make it 11 bl in | aVille's favor Ihen came the changing point in the game Likin. on a move to the basket, mowed over a Lancer detender and the call was blocking and not charging. I his enraged coach Radccki. who protested not only this, but the general wav the flow of breaks had been going and he was slapped with a technical. Ihen another goof bv the officials, they messed up and let Harness shoot the first technical foul first, instead of the one-and-onc. After some discussion and quite a delay. Harness then hit the second and 1 Ikin then hit both ends of the per sonal call. ! his cut the lead to five and gave Glenn the ball, but thev weren't able to take advantage and score their sixth straight point, but it realty turned the momentum of both the plavers and the crowd. Miller got another inside lay-in with 2:2" left, but this was to be the last I ancer basket for some time as Glenn was to eventually forge ahead. Baskets by Parker and Flkin from inside on the boards, was followed bv a 16 footer bv Mike Vnett just ahead of the buzzer and it was 45-44 LaVille after three. Likin turned another rebound into a basket as the final period started and for the first time in the game Glenn was ahead. However, from between the front line and back line of the zone. Whiteman was left all alone and he hit two shots about 40 seconds apart that put I aVille back in front 40-46 with 6:2" left in the game. Arnett came right back with an 11 footer from the left side and the next time down the floor he matched this from the right side and Glenn was once more in front bv one with 5:33 showing on the scoreboard clock. LaVille in this streak, had some shots but got just a little careless with their selection and simplymissed in an almost rushed effort. Add to this that Glenn was willing to kill some clock and there was no scoring at all for just under three minutes as a few turnovers also kept the teams from scoring. At the 2:38 mark a savage charge to the basket that sent two Lancers sprawling gave Parker another re bound basket and all of a sudden the Falcons led bv three. 52-44 A 1 aVille miss gave Glenn the ball ba* k but an offensive foul for Uxi strong of pushing and jostling under the basket bv Parker gave uj> possession once and two bad passes also turned the ball over. \llen hit one of two free throws at th* 2 14 mark and after one of the mentioned turnovers, lorn Dykstra hit a baseline driving short shot to knot the count at 52. Glenn t*x>k a timeout with 1 10 left and after returning to action, they moved the ball around but found no holes in the strong lancer defense until almost out of desper ation. Tinkey tried to force a drive to the basket where there was no hole, but the foul was whistled against Dvkstra as three players went rolling. This was with :I2 showing on the chxk. After one timeout bv LaVille. Tinkey hit the first, then another LaVille timeout, their fifth, preceded the second free throw attempt which linkey missed. Miller cleared and thev moved down court for the heroic effort bv Mien that won the game. \ Glenn timeout set up a plav with two seconds showing, but a two thirds tlie court pass was hit first bv a lancer before I inkev finally gained possession and a last second desperation shot from 24 feet came dearly after the time had expired li had to be heartbreak for Glenn, who could have wrapped up a conference crown in a so-so season I hex are now 8 " overall, 4 I in conference plav before the Culver game I aVille is 116 and 3-1 to date I he I ancers had three plavers in double figures with Miller, Car biener and Dvkstra hitting 14, 12 and 10 res|x\tivelv.
