THE SlOR> OF FOUR CHAPLAINS (continued) Johnny P Washington grew up in Newark. New Jersey of poor Irish immigrant parents. The few pennies he made from his paper route helped feed the nine people in the house. Johnnv loved music and sang in the church choir and he loved to fight too. He was the leader of the South Twelfth St. bovs and it was at this period of his life, he decided to become a priest. And he was always laughing, right through his training as a priest and after he was ordained. He plaved ball in the streets with the bovs from his parish; he organized ball teams and when the war came and his bovs went into the Army, lather Johnnv went right along w ith them. ( lark Poling was the youngest of the Four Men of God. He also was the seventh generation in an un broken line of ministers in his family, his father having served in WW| and was again seeing service as ( haplain When the war came along Poling did not want to go as a Chaplain. He did not want to hide behind the C hurch in a safe office. I he elder Poling joked. “Don’t vou know that the mortality rate of the Chaplains is the highest of all?" And so ( lark Poling became a (haplain February 3. 194.3 — The Dor Chester was close enough to Green land, she just might make it But at 1 AM. torpedo from the German submarine hit in the boiler room. Many were killed instantly and many were trapped below. On deck, amid the confusion and terror, the Four Chaplains were moving about calming frightened men. directing bewildered soldiers to lifeboats, and distributing life jackets Ihe supply of life jackets was soon exhausted, but four young soldiers shxxl waiting They were afraid and they had no life jackets. Quickie the ( haplams stripped off their own and forced them upon the young men The four men of God had given away their only means of saving themselves in order to save others The Dorchester went down 25 minutes later in a rumble of steam Some b()0 men were lost, but the heroic Chaplains had helped save over 200. Men rowing awav from the stricken ship in lifeboats saw the Four ( haplams clinging to each other on the slanting deck I heir arms were linked together and their heads were bowed. They were praving to the one God whom each of them loved and served the God and Father of all mankind So. it is the Sunday nearest February 3 that honor and praise is given these men I he American legion Auxiliary will observe Re ligious Emphasis week, beginning February 1. at their February meeting Orville Fasterdav Unit 189 American legion Auxiliary 65 SPEED LIMIT BILL MOVES OUT OF COMMITTEE A bill in the House of Representatives which would raise the speed limit from 55 MPH to 65 MPH moved out of the Public Safety ( ommittee recently with a 9 0 vote. Rep H Patrick Bauer (D South Bend), the co author of the bill. (HB 1035) stated that. “Indiana’s interstate highways are built for speeds of 80 MPH w hu h eliminates any safety questions." Rep. Bauer also commented that, “the present lowered high wav speed limit has served as a deterrent to the United States’ full scale adjustment awav from its de pendence on foreign oil because the 55 MPH speed limit has made the United States less aggressive in its pursuit of alternative fuel choices". "The present 55 MPH speed limit is one of the least complied with laws. Those who do comply with the 55 MPH speed limit are faced with a cost increase in man hours for the delivers of goods, and
