WILDLIFE TODAY By Roy Grimes Wildlife Biologist Indiana Division of Fish & Wildlife A wildlife management contest?' Yessirec! All Indiana High School biology departments, das scs. or individual students have an opportunity to enter a Youth Aw ards Contest. Ilie contest, which is sponsored bv Indiana's Division of Fish & Wildlife under its new Save Our Small game program (S.C).S.) is being offered to students in order to promote a better understanding of basic wildlife management principles. Since the key to maintaining wildlife populations in Indiana (or any place else for that matter) is to provide adequate cover and food of habitat, the contest is aimed tow ards emphasizing the role of habi tat manipulation in managing wildlife populations. The contest involves selecting a 20 acre tract (or larger), indicating what kind of hapitat is present (draw a cover map), and developing a management plan for improving the wildlife habitat. This 20 acre tract could be school propertv. government land, private ground, or even urban acreage I he entrant then must draw a map indicating what habitat conditions presently exist on the tract such as; fencerows, brushpilcs, ponds, wixxllot. marsh, or bare ground. Next the student(s) prepare a pro posed management plan for the same tract indicating improvements to the habitat. Such im provements mav include; brushpilc construction, tree or shrub plant ing, nesting cover creation, etc. Although it is encouraged, the actual implementation of the developed habitat improvement plan need not be carried out in order to win the contest. The cover map and the newly developed management plan are (hen sent to the Indiana Division of Fish A Wildlife in Indianapolis for judging. The judging team will consist of professional biologists and supervisors. The entries will be judged for practicality, accuracy. originality, neatness, and the use of wildlife habitat improvement practices consistent with wildlife management theories. Every contest must have an award and in this wildlife contest five winners will be chosen — Statewide An Indiana biologist will visit each winning school to award a S2OO cash prize to the biologv department In addition, statewide publicity in the form of rV. radio and newspaper announcements will be used to honor the winners. If you are a high school student or know one who is interested in wildlife tell him her about this exciting contest — tell vour biologv teacher also. Let's get involved!
