Falcons Top Triton In NSC Game Friday A couple of changes in personnel certainly appeared to help the John Glenn Falcons Friday night as they returned to the basketball wars after almost a two week absence. A 21 point scoring performance by sophomore Mike Arnett, moved into a starting position by coach Jim Waller, paced a free-throw dominated victory for Glenn over Northern State Conference member. Triton. 83-75. It was the second win in four starts for Glenn and their first conference victory . The game started with the smaller Trojans somewhat taking the plax away from the Falcons as their hustle, good positioning on the boards and some good shot selection found them gaining the early lead It was almost nip-and-tuck except for the fact that Triton got the game's two first baskets and the Falcons went more than half a quarter before the caught and evetually passed the Trojans Jeff Tinkey, Mike Elkin and Zane Hathaway all had five first quarter points with Doug Miller, another plaver moved into a key situation on the varsity, getting the other two free throws on the way to a I "15 first quarter lead. The Falcons used their inside game pretty well in this period with Hathaway not only driving well for his points but feeding underneath also to the junior tandem of Tinkey and Elkin. This duo continued to impress earlv as Tinkey got two quick baskets off Hathaway feeds and Elkin a three-point play to jump to a safe lead that was to only be seriously threatened on a couple more occasions all night. Glenn led as much as 10 points in the second period and held a 41-33 halftime margin, something different from their lower scoring games in their first three outings. Flkin had 14 at the main intermission with Tinkey right behind at 13. The real story of the game had been building throughout the first half but became very evident in the third quarter. Triton's smaller Trojans were getting into foul trouble and at one point in the third stanza had three starters on the bench with four personals. A couple of three-point plays, the first by Parker and the second by Hathaway, kept the Falcons up by around 10 points most of the way until late in the period. Then, with the Glenn team well into the bonus situation, four straight free throws

in the final 48 seconds opened the lead to 56 47 with one period left. In the third quarter. Glenn hit only four baskets and got the first two of the final period by Arnett and Miller with less than a half minute gone. The 60-47 lead was the game s largest at this point. However, the scrappy Trojans did not throw in the towel. A six point spurt, broken by two Tinkey free throws, was followed by a personal six point spurt by Triton s Jack Carpenter, who with this effort pulled the Trojans to within three, 62-59. although he was one of those playing with four fouls. Arnett and Elkin each hit two one-pointers. Kelly Howard swished a I 4 footer and Miller and Elkin came back with two more free throws to open the lead to nine once again. It was a good thing the Falcons were hitting the charity shots because they weren’t putting the ball up much. After Wes Runnels canned a 12 footer. Tinkey finally broke Glenn's streak of over four minutes w ithout a basket as he scored a lay-in. Another lay-in by Arnett w ith just 1:07 left in the game gave Glenn their fourth basket of the quarter and only their eighth of the half. However, the steady trek to the free throw line and some fine free throw shooting paced by Arnett's perfect 13 for 13. held the Trojans at bay and accounted for the 83-75 victory. Carpenter. Triton's fine shooting veteran, led all scorers with 25 points. Glenn's balance of 21 by Arnett. 20 by Elkin, and |7 and 12 respectively by Tinkey and Hathawav made up the difference. Triton had double figure production bv Jeff Deaton and Runnels, with 16 and 12 each. In all. four Trojans fouled out as did Brian Parker for Glenn. B-Team Wins Easily The Glenn B Team racked up another victory as they won easily by a 50-39 final in a game they lead safely most of the way.
