PUT THE “ZAP” TO LATEST ZIP PLAN The latest plan of the U. S. Postal Service in regards to its Zip Code is one that certainly the public doesn’t need. Only common sense would tell you this latest idea, intended to further sorting of mail by machines, will not be an easy one to administrate and certainly would be very hard to get accepted by the public. They have been working on this plan for some time and it appears to be one that regardless of the planning and purpose in mind, it will not be well received by the public at all. If we understand it right, from what has been made available to date, this is to further sorting mail at sectional centers and points of origin, to supposedly aid in getting it to the proper route carriers. The new plan calls for nine digit zip codes, and that alone is enough to turn most people off. By this time most people can remember their own zide code, the ones they use frequently, but still have to seek aid a great deal of the time whether it be looking it up one’s self or getting aid from a local post office. However, to expect the public to learn and use easily the nine digit number in itself is hard to comprehend. Then add to that fact the additional problem that will result. From what we understand, a post office the size of Walkerton or North Liberty, would not have one zip code, would not have one for each route, but would have several for each route and therefore a lot of different zip codes inside of each post office. A rural route or carrier’s route itself would have several, depending on the number of patrons served. This would not only add confusion to mailing out of town, but would make an in town mailing even in smaller post offices a nightmare. We would challenge any plan that is going to replace the local clerks and carriers in sorting the mail to the chance that it could be done more efficiently and more economically under the new plan. No one knows their routes and customers better than those who are working with them and serving them everyday. And then add to this the fact that errors in zip codes would certainly increase greatly if use would be accepted by the public. Mechanism is a wonderful thing in many places and for many jobs, but we feel the expanding and confusing of the zip code program would be a serious and costly mistake. The expense alone would be in figures we cannot comprehend. In addition, an increase from 40,000 to nearly 20 million would make it impossible to get quick and accurate service. It would take publications much greater than a set of encyclopedias to break down and make available all the zip codes and then it would also necessitate the user knowing the complete address in order to get the proper nine digit number on the mail. The instigation of such a program could be a disaster for the U. S. Postal Service. Their services have not improved with the times anyway, and to make it more difficult and trying to use, could be a real kiss of death for a service that cannot pay its way anyway and certainly does not need to take another step backward. And also, remember not too long ago some other government agencies were coming up with the answer to save money and time and confusion with a couple of great ideas . . . the two dollar bill . . . and the off-sized Susan B. Anthony dollar coin! WHEN... (Taken From The Files Os The Independent -News)
