Shamrocks Fall To LaVille In Season Finale The LaVille Lancers used a good defense to set up opportunities and a steady offense that took advantage of the situations to end their and the North Liberty Shamrocks football season Wednesday night. The Lancers scored 20 first half points to take command of the game and then broke the contest wide open in the fourth quarter with 20 more points after the Shamrocks had scored in the third period to take a 40 lb decision in the season finale. The loss dropped the Shamrocks season record to 3-7 and they were tied with Glenn and Culver at 1-4 in conference play. LaVille finished in the second spot behind league champion New Prairie with the win making their conference record 4-1 and overall they are 5-5. 3 Had Intercepted 0 46 Return Yards 151 I Punts 3 24 Average Yards 41 0 Fumbles Lost 0 40 Yards Penalized 101 The contest, a North Liberty home game played on the LaVille field under the lights, found the two teams fairly even in most statistics with the big difference coming in the three r >s interceptions the Lancers wer. able to pull off. Each led to arreventual score. The Lancers scored first, thanks to the first of their pass interceptions A quick pass over the line was picked off by Steve Shamo and he returned it to the North Liberty four yard line. It took just two plays with Dan Fictz pounding over from one yard out. Ken Carbiener kicked the extra point and the lancers had a quick 7-0 lead. The second score followed on the next LaVille possession. North Liberty tried a fake punt and threw an incomplete pass that gave the Lancers great field position. This time the Shamrock defense made the Lancers grind it out, 10 plays in all covering 41 yards before Feitz once again found his way into the end zone from in close, this time three yards out. Another kick made it 14-0. the way the first quarter ended. The last touchdown of the first half, and one that really hurt, came following another Shamo interception. A seven play drive put the ball in the end zone with Chris Jordan scoring this time. The kick failed, but with time less than a minute to go in the half, the first 24 minutes ended with LaVille ahead 20-0. North Liberty got on the board and back in the game in the third stanza. A couple of pass interference penalties aided a Shamrock drive and Duane Wunder punched it in from the one. Plaicido Olivarez then ran the extra points in and it was 20-12 with the Shamrocks now back in the thick of it. However, a big fourth quarter ended any hopes the Shamrocks might have of pulling off an upset in this contest. Greg Gurtner ended a long drive, mostly on the ground, by passing the final 15 y ards to Ken Carbiener. Again the kick failed, but this pul the Lancers up 26-8 with the action now in the final quarter. However. North Liberty would not say die. They tried hard to drive for a quick score, but the third interception of the night, this time by Tom Dykstra, ended any hope here. The Lancers then moved in for a score with Gurtner hitting Dykstra for the final 10 yards as the clock had now run down to less than three minutes to play. A kick made it 33-8, but the action was far from over. The Shamrocks then drove down the field with Wunder carrying the ball and Mike Coppens was throwing it to score with just seconds left when Wunder plowed in from one yard out. A run by Olivarez upped the count to 33-16, but with just seconds left it seemed all over. However, this also was not to be. On the kickoff. Jordan gathered in the ball at the 10 yard line and broke through the line of Shamrocks first rush down field and the race was on. He outran the attempts to catch him and scored on the long play. Carbiener’s kick only meant setting the final score.
