Savvy cooks treasure re cipes that please the family and save money. When ; recipe yields something ir addition to that, somi cooks refer to it as a recip< that pays dividends. Thi accompanying recipe foi Doughnuts is such a recipe The holes from the dough nuts are used to make Pecar Rolls. The procedure goes like this: a caramel syrup goes into the bottom of prepared muffin pans and pecan halves go on top of the syrup Add the holes from the cut doughnuts. 5 holes for each muffin cup. After rising for about an hour, the rolls are baked The doughnuts are fried, then sugared and ready to be served with cot fee or cider. The recipe makes 30 doughnuts and six Pecan Rolls But you can vary that according to your needs DOUGHNUTS/PECAN ROLLS Makes 30 doughnuts and 6 rolls 1 cup warm w ater (105 F 115 F.) 2 packages Fleischmann's Active Dry Yeast 2/3 cup sugar 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup mashed potatoes (at room temperature) 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) softened Fleischmann's Margarine 1 ‘'kk («t room temperature) 4 or 5 cups unsifted flour 1/4 cup firmly packed light brown sugar 2 tablespoons light corn syrup 2 tablespoons Fleiscl mann's Margarine 18 pecan halves peanut oil

La/iurc of the Walkerton Police Department, will be graduating from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy at 1:00 p.m. this Friday. October 31. Former U. S. District Attorney John E. Hirschman will be the principal speaker. Colonel Arthur R. Raney. Jr., the Academy’s Executive Director, and Deputy Ronald L. Hudnut of the Steuben County Sheriff's Department, class president. will also address the graduating officers, their families and guests. Ninety-nine officers will be participating in the ceremony —a culmination of 400 hours of training during ten weeks in residence at the Academy. Indiana requires all non-elected law enforcement officers within the State to successfully complete basictraining within their first year of

Measure warm water into large warm bowl. Sprinkle in active dry yeast; stir until dissolved. Stir in sugar, salt, potatoes, 1/4 cup margarine, egg and 2 cups flour; beat until smooth. Stir in enough additional flour to make a soft dough. Turn out onto lightly floured board, knead until smooth and elastic, 8 to 10 minutes. . Place in greased bowl, turni ing to grease top Cover; let rise in warm place, free from draft, until doubled in bulk, about 1 hour Meanwhile, combine light brown sugar, corn syrup and remaining 2 tablespoons margarine in saucepan. Heat, stirring, until mar ganne nelts and mixture is smooth. Divide evenly among six greased 2-1/2 x 1-1/4-inch muffin
RETENTION OF FIVE JUDGES ON STATE BALLOTS

One Indiana Supreme Court justice and four Court of Appeals judges will be subject to non-parti-san balloting on their retention in office w hen Hoosier citizens vote in the General Election on Tuesday. November 4. Listed on a state judicial ballot, separate from partisan party nominees for other state offices, will be Supreme Court Associate Justice Alfred J. Pivarnik of Valparaiso, and Court of Appeals Judges V. Sue Shields of Sheridan. Eugene N. Chipman of Plymouth. Stanley B. Miller of Indianpolis, and James B. Young, of Franklin. The public ballot will ask on each: “Shall Justice (or Judge) (name) be retained in office? Yes or No.” Voting will be statewide for Jusservice. Failure to do so results in the officer losing the power of arrest. All who graduate Friday will have met the minimum standards of education, physical, mental and moral fitness established by the Law Enforcement Training Board and will be certified in law enforcement officers.

ticc Pivarnik and Judges Chipman, Miller and Young. The latter three serve the Fourth District, Court of Appeals, which is an at-large district serving the entire state. Balloting on Judge Shields will be limited to 19 Central Indiana counties which make up the Second District of the Court of Appeals. The 1980 retention vote will be the fourth since 1972. when a Constitutional Amendment took effect and removed all appellate-level judges from partisan nomination and election processes. All five judges were appointed by Governor Otis R. Bowen and have completed the interim service of at least two years which is required previous to their standing on a retention ballot. Justice Pivarnik was named May 13. 1977. and Judge Shields on July I. 1978, each succeeding retiring judges. Judges Chipman. Miller and Young were appointed August 1. 1978 as the first judges of the newly-created Fourth District, established to help meet growing caseloads of the Court of Appeals. Judges confirmed for retention by the voters, then will begin 10 year terms. Those continuing to serve arc subject to retention

Pour a little of the sauce over the chicken, leaving part of the browned chicken uncovered, pour remaining sauce around the chicken Bake 20 minutes longer, or until tender. Stir the sauce in the pan and serve with the chicken. Makes 4 servings.
