Third Graders Write About Being President Third grade students were given a writing assignment: “If I Were Elected President. I Would ..." Hollowing are some choice responses. “If I were elected President. I would cut down on toys and groceries prices 50% and clothes 40%. I would tell the truth. I would try to get hostages back and make my dad boss of NIPSCO and people who were on strike I would give them money. People who were poor I would give them money and thats what I would do if I was President." “If I were elected President. Brian Parker Is Commended As Student The principal. John McNeil, of John Glenn High School, announced today that one senior is being commended for his outstanding performance in the 26th annual 1981 National Merit Scholarship Program. A letter of commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation, which conducts the competition, will be presented to Brian Parker. More than one million students entered the 1981 Merit Program bv taking the PSAT/NMSQT in 1979. About 33,000 of these students throughout the United States will receive a commendation for outstanding test performance. Commended students rank below the level required for Merit Program Semifinalists — the only participants who will continue in the 1981 competition for Merit Scholarships. Nonetheless, Commended students
have shown exceptional academic promise bv scoring among the top five percent of Merit Program participants. An officer of the corporation stated that “to be designated a ( ommended student in the Merit Program is an attainment deserving of public recognition. The continued educational and personal development of such students will benefit the entire nation." Commended students who requested it have been referred as worthy candidates to admissions and financial aid officers at two higher education institutions of their choice. It is hoped that the referral service and Merit Program recogniation will result in assistance for these Commended students as they pursue their educational goals. UREY GIRLS LOSE TO PLYMOUTH IN VOLLEYBALL The Urey girls volleyball teams lost to Plymouth Wednesday afternoon of last week. The 7th grade came back from a 15-0 loss in the first game only to lose the second 15-13. The Bth grade lost by scores of 15-0 and 15-7. Both teams are 1-1 for the season. UREY PANTHERS LOSE TO NEW PRAIRIE The Urey Bth grade football team was defeated by New Prairie 6-0. The team played their best game of the year. Delane Overton had seven tackles and an interception. Bob Brandt intercepted a pass and Fred Newland recovered a fumble. Overton led the offense with 49 yards.
Kenny Rogers’ Country Chicken Salad With Down-Home Flavor
Country singer Kenny Rogers has traveled full circle in the music business. His first million-selling record, "Crazy Feeling," reached the charts when he was 19 years old, and prompted the singer to leave home in Houston to establish his career. He landed an appearance on American Bandstand, followed by stints with the Bobby Doyle Jazz Trio and the New Christy Minstrels. But when the Minstrels jiarted, he and former members formed the rock group that Rogers eventually headlined, The First Edition. They left behind a string of hit songs, including “Ruby, (Don’t Take Your Love to Town)," and "Tell It All, Brother,” when they disbanded. Four years ago, Kenny returned to the music scene bringing with him his Southern heritage, and recognition of his talent as a country per former was quick in coming. Last year, in addition to hosting the prestigious Coun try Music Association Awards Show, he was voted Male Vocalist of the Year and his album, “The Gambler," (UA) won Album of the Year Rogers is nominated in four categories for this year's CMA Awards Show including Entertainer of the Year, Single of the Year, Album of the Year and Male Vocalist of the Year The show will be sponsored by Kraft, October 13 (9:30 — 11 PM ETT) on the CBS Television Network Because of the demands of his country music activity, Kenny admits he doesn’t have much time for cooking, however, his country roots have influenced his taste in food as well as in music. One of his sentimental favorites is “Kenny Rogers’ Country Chicken Salad,” a recipe which he has enjoyed over the years, not only because it tastes good, but also because it is so simple to prepare. "My mom knew more ways to fix chicken than anybody,” says Kenny. “Chicken and chicken salad were part of our childhood, and, you know.

Tod Anderson, president, presided at the business session. LaPorte County year pins and Township pins were presented by Floyd Dipcrt of the advisory committee. Jay Wright, a five-year member, received a jacket. The leaders received aw ards from the Township also. The club was especially honored this year as Jill Bolze won Grand Champion with her steer. Other advisory committee members are Harold Knowlton. Dean Anderson. Mrs. Jon Smith and David Knowlton. GLENN GIRLS LOSE TO RANKED LAPORTE TEAM The John Glenn girls vollevball team last Wednesday hosted the LaPorte volleyball team, ranked high in the state, and went down to their second defeat in 10 outings, breaking an eight game winning streak. LaPorte won the match by scores of 15-4 and 15-13. LaPorte stretched its season record to 14-1. For Glenn Barb Peacock was the best served with a 3.2 quality rating while Pam Aitken had a perfect 6 for 6. Aitken also led the spikers with four kills while Traci

GLENN GIRLS STAY UNBEATEN IN CONFERENCE Jhe John Glenn girls volleyball team remained unbeated in Northern State Conference plav Tuesdav evening as they dropped La Ville bv scores of 13 15. 15-8 and 15-13. For the Lady Falcons Deb Miller was the best server with a 2.45 rating while Pam Aitken had a perfect 11 out of 11. Aitken also was the best spiker with 7 kills. Cindy Shipley and Barb Peacock led the passing game with a 2.0 rating. The win boosted the Glenn girls to 9-2 overall and 3-0 in conference play. LaVille dropped to 2-7. The Glenn B-Tcam also won bv scores of 10-15, 15-11 and 15-11. The leading server was Rita Schmidt and the best passer was Kristi Kripe. Glenn s B-Team now has a 4-7 record while LaVille is now at 4-5.
