M.C. Elston Is Just Too Much For Shamrocks By Harry Griffey They came, they saw, they conquered. The visiting Michigan City Red Devils overcame a strong Shamrock second period and a halftime lead to up-end Liberty 66-52. The Red Devils showed a sticky swarming defense that caused North Liberty to have some turnovers and cold shooting. Strong Jest Martin gave the home team the first points with a one-handed lumper from about eight feet out. The Red Devils got the next five before Mark VanderHagen hit a 14 footer. The Shamrocks were missing shots that they normally made and were having trouble getting the ball inside. The only lay-in made by Liberty was on a court - length pass from Martin to John Gouker with only a minute left on the clock. As the quarter ended the Red Devils had a 17-12 lead. With onlv seven seconds off the clock Martin once again got the opening basket followed bv Brian

Donathcn s jumper from the free throw line. At 5:2b Donathcn made a one plus one putting the Shamrocks down by just one. Price was heard from as well as Vander Hagen. Gouker and Dave Dudzinski as the first half ended with 1 ibertv in from 30-23. The Shamrixk defense was sterling as they held the Red Devils to only six points on four free throws and just one field goal. Elston tixik 13 shots and made only one as the home team kept them away from the basket and made them shoot from outside. The halftime found me in the cafeteria getting some popcorn for the last time this year at North Liberty. 1 give my thanks to all the hard working Band Boosters who ran the concession stands during the basketball season. This will also be my last article for “The Independent-News'' this year. Our fearless editor. Bob Urbin. will be doing the coverage of the sectional games. 1 will give thanks to Bob also for the opportunity to write the Shamrocks basketball stories for the '79-80 season. I'm sure the faithful fans and readers are grateful for the chance to see the ex-
polits of the Green (lad in print. rhe third period saw the Red Devils begin their comback as they became much more patient and worked harder to get the ball inside. The Shamrocks on the other hand, took some bad shots and the Red Devils would come down with the rebounds. By the end of this stanza the seven point halftime lead had been cut to just two. The momentum was definatelv shifting. It takes four quarters to play a ballgame, not three. In the final period the visitors scored 24 points to the Shamrocks 8. The only points scored by Liberty in the first seven minutes were at the charity stripe. That's right, seven minutes. The Red Devils blocked-out beautifully and kept the shamrocks off the boards as they grabbed up all the rebounds. Elston pretty much did what they wanted in this quarter as the Shamrocks crumbled When the final buzzer sounded the scoreboard read Visitors 66. Home Let's hope that the Shamrocks got it out ouf their system as they head into the sectional Wednesday night against LaVille. I'm sure that the Lancers are still smarting from that 27 point defeat a few weeks ago when the Shamrocks wrapped up the Northern State Conference. I predict a very close bailgame as the Lancers bounce back. We will need to fill the Shamrock block and be very vocal in our support of our favorite team. Libcrtv did not get any breaks this year as they will probably have to play Argos if they get by LaVille. The scoring leaders from Liberty were Ron Price with 15. followed by Brian Donathcn and John Gouker with 10 each. The Shamrocks end the regular season with an 11-8 record. Bees Upset Elston The Sharmcok B-Tcam ended the season on a winning note when they upended the Red Devil Bees 55-51. Behind 4-0 at the start of the first quarter, the Shamrocks caught fire and scored 14 straight points and from then on never trailed. The 11-8 B-Team was led by Rob Cortier with 18, John Brandt had 10. Pat Franklin 10 and Brian Griffey and Jeff Donathcn six each, while Dave Kaser chipped in five. Box Score M. C. This was documented in 1960 hy a 123-p ou n d woman in Tampa, Florida. The woman, Mrs. Maxwell Rogers, lifted one end of a 3,600 pound car after it had fallen on top of her son when the jack holding up the car slipped. She suffered only a fewcracked vertebrae as a result of her efforts. • * *
