WALKERTON TOWN BOARD NEWS The Walkerton Town Council met on Monday. December 3 in regular session with members 0. C. White. Gladys Prentis and Jack Ki4ck present. They approved the minutes of the previous meeting and claims 825 through 859. Ihe monthly report of Gene Brems, fire chief, was given. He reported three fires, one assist, 158 man hours and they spent $360.00 for the month. He also summarized the year as such: 12 monthly meetings. 12 training sessions, 69 dispatcher call outs. 9 assists, 3 tornado watches. 30 Walkerton fires. 21 Lincoln Township fires, 5 Johnson Township fires. The department has spent $6,414.93 for the year. Brems then thanked the board members for their help in 1979. Chief Brems announced to the board that they have started the fund raiser for Stephanie Bellinger with the hope for approval by the town board. The board definatcly approved the project. He also reported the city fire truck needs repair on a pipe that has rusted through. He asked permission to have the truck taken to Valparaiso for repairs, the cost to be $200.00. A motion was made, seconded and approved to have this needed repair made. Police chief John Marek, gave his monthly report of four criminal arrests and two traffic arrests. With the proceeds from the country and western show the reserves bought a polaroid earners, badges for jackets, a first aid kit and blankets for all the cars. Marvin Williams, superintendent of the utilities departments, requested the EMT’s see that the garage door is shut when they pull the ambulance out. Ed Walz, of the Planning Commission. presented two ordinances prepared bv the commission on unsafe building and establishment of a department of buildings and office of building commissioner. The town attorney. DeVere Goheen. was requested to study the ordinances for approval of the board at their next meeting. A special meeting will be called on the problem with the State Highway Department concerning the drainage on State Road 23 south. An equal opportunity ordinance was presented on the HUD Project. It was approved on a motion and second by the board. An ordinance to reduce the Cumulative Building Ac Sinking Fund, if need be. was approved by the board. Randy Williams asked the board to table his bid on the Ruth Paul project until he could gather further knowledge of the project. Ihe board agreed to postpone his bid. Two appraisal bids were submitted. one from Ralph Michaels and one from R. E. McCloskey. A bid from Savoie Construction was approved on the Lucille Hickman project. A building permit was presented from Mr Baugher on a garage. The permit presented no problems that would go against the ordinances so it was approved providing Baugher drains the water correctly With no further business, the meeting was adjourned Our classifieds — Only $1 25! Governor Urges Bells To Ring & Noon Day Prayer Governor Otis R. Bowen on Friday. November 30. urged all churches in the state to ring their bells or chimes every day as a “message of hope" that the 50 American hostages being held in Iran be released safely. Also suggested by the Governor is that every Hoosier pause at noon, daily, for a moment of silent prayer for the safety of the hostages and for a peaceful resolution of the differences between Iran and the United States. The suggestion of ringing church bells first came from Clarence J. Brown. Ohio Congressman, and is rapidly spreading across the country. CPR Classes To Be Held In January CPR classes will be held on January 15, 17 and 22 at the Urey Middle School, in Walkerton, at 7:00 p.m. each evening. SBCSC Lunches To Increase In Price January 7 Effective Monday. January 7, 1980, lunch prices in all South Bend Community School Corporation schools will be as follows: Elementary. $ .45 daily. $2.25 weekly. High School, $ .60 daily, $3.00 weekly. Adult SI.OO daily. This is the first increase on the daily lunch price to students since 1973. Efficient operation, dedicated food service personnel, and hard work has contributed to the low-priced lunch, however, increased food and labor costs mandate the adjustment. Todd Allsop Is DAR Recipient From N.L.H.S. Todd Allsop has been named the top citizen in the senior class of North Liberty High School, in a contest sponsored bv the Schuyler Colfax Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). Todd was selected by the senior class at North Liberty High School in a recently held general election. Voting was based upon the four major characteristics of dependability. service, leadership, and patriotism. Todd is the son of Richard and Janice Allsop. 29632 State Road 4, North Liberty. In addition to being ranked in the top thirteen per cent of his class, Todd has been active in numerous other school activities. He is currently president of the Student Council and captain of the basketball team. He has been captain of the tennis team and is a member of the National Honor Society.

BRUCE P. FITZGERALD Bruce Patrick Fitzgerald, 72. of 603 Ohio Street, Walkerton, passed away at 3:15 a.m. on Tuesday, December 4, at South Bend Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. He was born on June 30, 1907, in Walkerton and remained a life-long resident. He married the former Flossie Gardner on August 29, 1929. in South Bend, who survives. He was a retired postal clerk with the Walkerton Post Office. Surviving along with his wife are a daughter. Mrs. James Capek, of Walkerton; and a son. Dallas L.. of Glendale. Arizona; and five grandchildren. He was a member of the Walkerton United Methodist Church. He and his wife celebrated their sis tieth wedding anniversary last August. Friend may call at the Nusbaum Elkin Funeral Home. Walkerton, from 2:00 to 4:00 and ”:00 to 9:00 on Wednesday, and Iron’ 9:00 a.m. until time of the services. Services will be at 2.00 p.m. on Thursday with Rev. Robert Gearheart, pdstor ot the Walkerton United Methvxlist Church, officiating at the Funeral Home. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Salvation Army Kettle Drive To Begin Saturday The Walkerton Salvation Armv committee, strictly a local organization. will start their annual kettle drive this Saturday and continue it the remaining Saturdays until Christmas. This drive is the sole support of the local Salvation Armv committee in their work in and around Walkerton. Again this year the committee has asked the aid of several local organizations to man the bells at the kettles on these Saturdays. Starting this Saturday, the Walkerton Chamber of Commerce will be handling the chores with two kettles again being used this year, one at the corner of Roosevelt Road and Illinois Street and the other at the corner of Illinois and Van Buren Streets. They will be manned from 9:00 a m. until 6:00 p.m. In following Saturdays the Walkerton Lions Club and Walkerton Jaycees have been asked to split the duties on December 15 and the Walkerton American Legion Post again asked to do the bell ringing on December 22 It is through the cooperation of these organizations that this drive is successful. The money gathered at this time of year will be used in the local community to make the holidays a little brighter for many families. The committee is also interested in receiving information on families that might need help at this time, the information needed being the family name, number of members in the family, ages, and what the cause for help might be. This information can be mailed to the Salvation Army Committee, in care of the Farmers State Bank of Wyatt. Walkerton. Indiana 465’4 for consideration by the committee. The donations of anyone, whether pennies or dollars, is very much appreciated and any donation certainly will go toward adding a little to the holiday festivities for mans area people, both young and old. November 28, in the I.aPorte Hospital after a brief illness She was born on August 25. 1888, in Nessen, Jutland Province. Denmark, and had lived in North Liberty for 47 years coming from Ohio. In 191 b she married Thomas McGwin. in New Mexico, who preceded her in death in 195’ She was a retired practical nurse Surviving are three daughters. Mrs. Pearl Aldrich and Mrs Leona Holderread, both of North liberty, and Mrs. Marian De Wald, of Beaver Dam. Wisconsin; four sons, Harold McGwin. ot North Liberty, Rodney McGwin. of Bellingham, Washington. David Good, of South Bend, and Donald Good, of Lebanon. Missouri, 20 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and a sister. Esther, of Everett. Washington Funeral services were held at 11:00 a m. on Friday at the Church of the Brethren. North Liberty, with Rev William Burgess, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Westlawn Cemetery. North Liberty. Memorial contributions may be made to the Helping Hand Fund of the church.
