Shamrocks Open Season With A Nice Win 55-38 By Harn Griffey 1 he 1979-80 edition of the North Liberty Shamrocks got things going with an exciting victory over host South Central last Wednesday night. Defense was one of the keys to the Shamnxks win as the Satellites had trouble with the Liberty press in the fourth quarter. Another key was the way the Shamnxks controlled the boards, out rebounding the hosts 39-19. Only John Gouker did well at the free throw line hitting four of five. Four of the missed freebees were on the front end of one-and-ones in the fourth quarter. Sophomore guard Mike Baum canned a lb footer for the Satellites but Brian Donathan gave 6'6" I <xld Allsop a great alley-opp pass for a score for Liberty. Tim Brust got one from the side at 5:50. followed by a soft jumper from Ron Price. Nathan Howell and Brust put the lead to four before smooth moving Jeff Martin barely moved the net on a 20 footer, then passed to Allsop for an easy one underneath. The tall Allsop has added some beef this year and looks g<xxl and strong on the boards. Baum was heard from once again from 16 feet out. Martin popped one in from the key but Howell hit a side shot to put South Central back on top 12-10. Martin tied the score by canning his own rebound then Brust hit a side shot just before the quarter ended with South Central on top 14 12. Martin got things going in stanza two by hitting a 1" footer but Howell made a three-point plav when Allsop got a piece of him as he shot. 1 here were numerous turnovers by both teams with verv little scoring as the defenses took charge. With about 1:50 left in the half, Baum really felt some frustration by having two shots in a row blocked by two different Shamnxks. Price soared out of the clouds on one and Martin did almost a repeat a few seconds later. Lhesc were key blocks that gave the Shamnxks a big lift she half ended with South ( entral on top 25-20. Donathen started things off bv getting a steal for a lav-in. The

Satellites lead was boosted to 29-22 at 6:10 but those were their last buckets for three minutes. Price and Donathan started a two man scoring show with Price giving the Shamnx’ks the lead for the first time at 2:13. Allsop scored a rebound basket with :19 left on the clock and the quarter ended with Liberty on top. 34-33. Allsop used his height to g<x>d advantage as he got a rebound basket. Husks sophomore Dave Dud/inski muscled one in to increase the lead to five. Gouker gave Dud/inski a great pass and then stole the in-bounds toss for two. The Liberty press was working. It wasn't until just over six minutes left that South Central put their first points on the board when Howell sank two free throws. Ihe Satellites started fouling and the Shamnxks nemesis, pcxir free throw shooting, could have taken its toll but hard-nosed defense kept the Sattelites from doing much scoring. For the last four minutes of the game the Satellites did not score a point. The game ended with Larry O'Connor scoring from underneath to make the final score 55-38. lhis was the first win over a South Central team in this reporter's memory. Balanced scoring was a big factor with Martin with 12, Price. Allsop and Donathan eight each while Dudzinksi and Gouker had six. I iberty lead the rebound depart ment 39-19. shot 51 per cent from the floor versus 39 per cent for South Central. An interesting stat that says a lot for the Liberty defense is that the Satellites made onlv two baskets from four fixit or closer to the basket. All other field goas were 15 feet or fruther out.
