Second Half Letdown Hands Falcons Defeat I wo big plavs back-to-back completely turned around a game that the John Glenn Falcons were winning in both score and statistics Wednesday night and resulted in a 28-” loss to Jimtow n in the season's finale. Ihe Falcons completely dominated the first half and got a big break on the second halt kickoff when they recovered a fumble. However, a pass interception for a touchdown, a very unnecessary unsportsmanlike penalty and ejection from the game along with a IS yard walkoff on the next kickoff which then was fumbled to completely turn the game around in Jimtow n's favor. The loss was the lOth straight for (denn this season, a complete re building season after their best record ever the preceding year. The win was only the second for Jimtown and let them escape the league's basement, that going to the loser of this game. However, they pushed across the first half’s only score on a pass of 8 yards from sophomore Mike Elkin to sophomore Jeff I inkey . Mark Izdepski. one of only two seniors on the

squad, kicked the extra point and it was -0. I his came with 6:13 left in the hall after an earlier drive had really moved the ball well only to get a major 1 5 yard penalty from the Jimtow n |6 f or holding and stopping the drive short of the goal line. Ihc complete reversal came qun k. Ihe Falcons kicked off w ith the w ind ami Jimtow n responded in the Falcons' favor bv fumbling and Izdepski recovered. However, a team that lives by the pass is also going to die by the pass as regardless of how good a passing game is. the ground attack is still a necessity. On the first play Elkin tried a slant-in that was cleanly picked off bv Mike Kelly and the defensive back ran the ball 7 4 yards untouched into the end zone. Add to it on this play a ridiculous personal foul bv Glenn’s David Nunley lor slugging a player 40 yards from the ball, resulted in his ejection from the game and a 15 yard penalty on the ensuing kickoff after the Jimmies took the lead on a two point conversion run bv Vic Mann. Kicking from the Glenn 45, a low kick hit an upfront Falcon lineman and was promptly covered bv the same alert Kelly. Even though the Jimmies didn’t score on this plav, the pattern was set. the plav was in (>lenn send of the field and the big void in the line left bv Nunlev certainly pointed out that a plaver doesn't help his team at all on the sidelines. Jimtown complete took over command of the game. (denn stopped them on a pass interception bv Doug Miller, but the Falcons were forced to punt and the Jimmies then went to work with a lot of mis directions plavs, reverses. etc., ami completely ran at will against the Falcons. A 10 plav drive, all on the ground, chewed up ”8 cards ami Scott Soli, w ho carried exactly once in the first half and lost a fumble, was the big force in the drive. He carried four times for runs of 15, 10. I 0 and 14 into the end zone to cap the drive. A missed extra point kept the Falcons within range, but the momentum

had switched so much, the (denn boy s just weren't to threaten again. (denn made a quick run, but an excited and fired up Jimtow n team stop, ped them one yard short of a first down in Jimtow n territory on a kev fourth down ami the Jimmies started another scoring drive that just simplv ground out the yardage at will. |en more running plavs covered the ”2 cards and this time, now in the fourth period, a good kick made it 2 I -7. From here it was all over. The falcons were intercepted twice in their struggling trs to come from behind and the Jimmies scored the last touchdown with just two minutes left to sew it up. Head coach Bill Farrell thyn elected to go for the win with a try for a two point conversion on a running plav that had been working well for the Shamrocks, but this time it was stopped inches short of the goal line and the Lancers then held on to wrap up an exciting 14-13 victory on a cool night at the Lancer field.
