35 Yards Penalized 35 62 Offensive Plays 51 The Redskins feature two big strong boys who really dominated the backfield play behind a line that was also overpowering as they raced to a whopping total of 431 yards on the ground, 197 of them by Vince Jacobs in just 19 carries. He scored six touchdowns and was aided very greatly by the play of quarterback Steve Bradley, who himself took advantages of the Falcon defense trying to stop Jacobs wide and skirted up the middle on keeper plavs when the defense was least expecting it. He totaled 95 yards in four carries and also threw fixe times, completing all fixe for another 93 yards. This tandem was just too much for the Falcons. Doug Miller pulled another long plax out of the bag as he returned the kickoff follow ing Knox's second score. 88 yards for a touchdown. And with this a good offensive performance by Mark 1/depski. who missed several games in the middle of the season with a broken thumb. However, the passing game of Glenn was no’ able to get completely untracked, but it did
open things up enough for their best rushing game of the season, 112 vards on the ground with Izdepski gaining the most. Knox scored the first six times they had the ball, all in the first half as Jacobs was the main weapon. He scored on a one yard plunge the first two times they had the ball and even though Bradley missed his first extra point try. a two point pass after the second score from Bradley to Pete Groote made it 14-0 before Miller's exciting touchdown dash for Glenn, Izdepski kicked the point to trim it to 14-7, but Knox took the next kickoff and moved bl yards in just three plavs with Jacobs picking up his third ID. Bradlev then kicked the first of seven straight conversions. Ihe Redskins added one more score in the first quarter, again Jacobs carry ing it in. this time from seven yards out. They added two more ID's in the second quarter making it six possessions, six scores as Bradley passed to Tony Snyder for the first and Jacobs ran the next one in from 43 yards out. The Falcons did come right back after Knox's last first half score to move b 4 yards in eight plays with the final 24 coming on a Mike Elkin to Jeff Tinkey pass. This came with just 29 seconds left in the half and l/depski put the final point of the high-scoring first half on with his second kick. A total of 5b points had been scored in the first 24 minutes, really giving the fans an offensive show. Knox scored three more times in the third quarter. Thev took the kick and moved 67 yards in six plays and later following a pass interception. moved 56 yards in nine plays. This ended Knox's offensive scoring, but the defense added one late in the quarter when a blocked Falcon punt followed a tremendous rush on Elkin, not normally the punter but pressed into duty with Tinkey shaken up a few plays earlier. The smearing of Elkin and the ball ended up with Scott Rein holt picking up the loose ball and running safely 24 yards for the game's last score. Both teams gave their benches a lot of playing time in the fourth period and no futher scoring accured with the final being 63-14. They ground out the yardage in 10 plavs with Mitch Kane finally lugging the leather in from three yards out for the score. They missed the extra point, but the early 6-0 lead was there. However, the Shamrocks returned ’he favor of using a mistake. After being forced to punt, they backed the Cougars extremely deep in their own territory and on a second down play, fumbled, and the alert Shamrock defense covered the ball on the Cougar eight yard line. Jeff Martin carried it on two carries to the 2 yard line and Tim Shreve then skirted around end into the end zone. John Gouker kicked the all important extra point, and it was 7-6. After these two early breaks and advantages taken on both counts, the rest of the first half turned into a defensive struggle with the Shamrock defense coming up with the stopping play when they had to. However, the fireworks started early in the second half. The Cougars took the kickoff and moved right down field in eight plays to score what was then the go ahead touchdown. Kane ran it in from five yards out. carrying four times in the drive for 43 yards. Scott Jones kicked the extra point for a 13-7 lead, but before much time had passed, this was to change again. Ihe Shamrocks on their next possession, used the air route to turn it around again. Gouker hit Mark VanderHagcn with a pass (hat found the entire plav covering 38 yards for a quick score. And once again the toe of Gouker was accurate, returning the Shamrocks to the lead 14-13. However, New Prairie was not to be denied in this second half. Lhev moved the ball from deep in their own territory very quickly with their only pass completion of the night picking up a fast 17 yards and the drive was really short-lived when Brian Williamson broke through the line on a routine quick opener, found the day light he needed early and then used a little of his own talent and speed to race 49 yards for the score. I his quick touchdown really hurt but the lead was still only six after Jones kicked another extra point. However, the game's final score followed shortly, again due to a North I iberty error. A fumble was recovered on the Shamrocks 2b yard line and they just turned it over to Kane who carried until he was in the end zone, four tries in all. Ihis time the Cougars ran for two points upping their lead to 28-14. I ven though there was still over a quarter to plav. this turned out to be the final score. The New Prairie defense held the Shamrocks and picked oft four aerials in aiding the cause.
