Knox Breaks North Liberty Streak At 6 The Knox Redskins, behind a stellcr performance by senior running back Vince Jacobs, dealt the North liberty Shamnxks a crushing blow as far as any playoff hopes the North I iberty team might have. Knox really dominated the play in ihe second half to break a tight game wide open on their wav to a 12 victors. The defeat was the second for North Liberty against five victories. The win was Knox's sixth in seven starts. Now the Shamrocks, if any hope of making ihe playoffs are to be had. have to have a lot of help from other teams and it appears that the job the Shan’nxks must face now is the job al hand, the battle for the Northern State Conference title as all three remaining foes on the Shamrocks schedule are conference teams and among the leaders in conference play. North Liberty ould not sustain a drive to go all the way. Meanwhile, the one-man gang. Jacobs, was picking up a whopping total of 279 yards on the ground in 31 carries, breaking both the big play and blasting the line on plunges and off-tackles as well. Knox never trailed. Jacobs broke a long one in the first quarter, ab 2 yard run that gave the home team that important first blood. A try for an extra point tailed when the kick was no g»xxl. but kicker Steve Bradley later in the initial quarter redeemed him self as he booted a 3b yard field goal to go ahead 9-0. This is how the first quarter ended. The Shamrocks, grinding out pretty gixxl yardage themselves, scored first in the second stanza. lim Shreve capped a drive with a 4 vard run that put then’ on the board, but the Shamrocks missed a try for two extra points on a run. Knox came back with a score as lony Snyder ux’k a 14 yard pass from Steve Mullins for the score. I his time the Redskins tried for two on a run and failed, but they led 15-6. Ihe Shamnxks weren't through however, as they came right back and Jeff Martin pulled the visiting Shamnxks within three on a 7 yard scoring run. Again the effort for two on a run failed and when the teams tixik the break at halftime. Knox was leading by the slight margin of 15-12. Ihe second half was all Knox as far as scoring was concerned Ihev also stopped the Shamrocks when they had to. to help protect the lead while the offense was running up the points. Jacobs again found daylight and broke another 62 yard effort. This upped the lead to nine as once more the extra points were missed on a run, but the hosts held this lead going into the all important final quarter. Jacobs got his third score of the night as he banged over from 2 yards out to end another successful drive. This time a Bradley to Scott Reinhoit pass added two extra points and the lead was expanded to 29-12, The game's final score came late in the contest when Bradley ran one in from 3 yards out and again a pass, this time from Greg Jacobs to Doug Biddle, added two more points to end the scoring for the night. wav the first quarter ended. I he ( ougars score twice more in the second period, a Scott Keller to Dave Maxwell pass accounting for the first one and Jack Davis broke a 45 vard run for the second. With Jones' tix* still on target, it was 28-0 at halftime. Ihe (ougars added what proved to be their final score in the third period. Kane again crossed into pay dirt, again from one vard out. It was 35-0 after three. However, the Falcons have not quite in anv game this year and again played to the end. Mike F.lkin hit Jett I inkev with a scoring pass with the plav covering 43 vards in all with less than two minutes left in the game. Mark Izdepski kicked the extra point and the Falcons had seven. I he action wasn’t over and again I inkev figured to be the man crossing the goal line on a pass, however, this time it was a New Prairie aerial that Jones threw only to have I inkey pick it off and race 40 yards for the score. A pass from Izdepski to Elkin added the game's final points. Ihe Falcons in losing, plaved some of the best football they have plaved this year. I hey were facing the strongest team they have faced this season as well and even though the points came late, the IS points and the stopping of the Cougars on several plavs of importance in the game, means a lot to John Hostraw ser's team.
