Digger Phelps Chairman Os ’79 Read-A-Thon Richard “Digger” Phelps, head basketball coach at Notre Dame University, has recently been named chairman of the W’M fall Multiple Sclerosis Read-a-thon. This marks the fourth year that “Digger” has been named chairman for Northern Indiana. Elementary and junior high schixd students in 2 7 Northern Indiana counties will have the opportunity to participate in the National Reading Motivational Program in October and November. The M-S Read a then is an educational program designed ti inspire children to read. ATTENDS N.F.M.C. 1979 FALL SESSION Mrs. Mildred Casev, d Koontz lake, was among the more than 3(H) members of NFMC and guests from 50 states who attended the annual Fall Session of NFMC' from August 9-13 in Charleston, South Carolina. Mrs. ( asev is student auditions chairman of NFMC. It was the I Sth National Meeting of the organization she has attended since she joined the 600,(XX) member NFMC . the largest philanthropic organization in the world. Among the highlights of the convention were major addresses expressing the theme of the Session, “I he Past —a Prelude to the Future,” by Mr. Stanley Adams. President. ASCAP, and the Honorable Richard W Riley, Governor, State of South C arolina. Musical highlights included an opera. “Flora or Hob in the Well.” the first opera performed in America. when it was performed in 1735 in the Courthouse in Charleston. Its author was Colly Cibber. Poet Laureate of England, it was performed for the Session in the Dink Street Theatre, first theatre in America. Garv Steigerwalt, 19"” NFMC Artist Winner in piano, was presented in concert at the Dock Street Lheatre. and “The C horaliers" appeared in concert at historical old South Carolina Hall, where they sang exerpts from "Porgy and Bess," which was written while Dubase Heywood lived in C harleston. Sightseeing events featured (he “Harbour Lights Cruise.” a twi light cruise with supper on the boat, cruising around the ( harleston harbor and coast; and a “C itv lour of Charleston” which includ ed the Nathanael Russell House built in IXO9. Presiding throughout the Session was the President. Mrs. Jack C . Ward of Greenville. South Carolina. Future meetings of the National Federation of Music Clubs are scheduled for Sun Valiev. Idaho in 19X0 and Birmingham. Alabama in 19X1.
