OUR POLICY AND AIM A couple of matters have arisen in recent weeks which makes it necessarx for us to explain a little bit of our policy and possiblx have to tighten our policies a little bit. We have had. as harmless as thev seemed at the time, a couple of "Happy Ads" come through the mail with cash in them that have later caused some feelings other than that of the intended use of this column. We started our "Happy Ads" a few xcars ago and in their tenure they have grown to be a popular addition to the paper. I am sure mans of you will remember well enough the almost mass campaigns to congratulate various individuals on the reaching of their 50th birthdays as one group of fun lovers have had a lot of fun with this Also, the very popular but simple Happy Birthday type, congratulations on achievements, births, anniversaries and especially Mother’s and Lather's day have had some very kind and happy greetings sent from one to another. Only an occasional time have we had to refuse one that maybe was a little to strong or ask someone to alter a happy ad. However, with the recent couple of ads that evidently were not of the true happy ad variety, unknown possibly to most except to those involved, we may have to exercise our privilege of refusing any ads we feel questionable, unless they are brought in and explained if there be any question. This has long been a newspaper’s right to refuse anything they felt was against their policy. The newspapers are the ones risking the liable or slander problems. We. as has every newspaper regardless of how large or small, at one time or another had to refuse submitted advertisements. letters, articles, etc., just to protect themselves. And worst of all and still common, is unsigned articles that usually have some malice in them if the person submitting them is too ashamed to sign their name. We want to keep everyone happy, especially with the popular "Happy Ads". But also we want to keep ourselves protected against any slanderous or insulting statements. One reason we have kept the "Happy Ads" at just SI.OO (well below the space rate) is the popularity and the fun derived from them. Along with this fun and frivolity, we have also had more and more recent use of the "Happy Ads" as tools of straight advertising as people are taking advantage of the space and rate charged for these ads. This will be changed at once, not that we won’t mention an upcoming event in the happy ads. but we are going to be forced to charge more for any ad with a business attitude or financial gain involved with the message. We have managed to keep our rates down, our last increase of any size or form came in 1975 when we discontinued printing our own paper and started jobbing it out to be printed by the more modern, clean and easy-to-read offset process. Our classified and display advertising rates did not even change at that time, only the yearly subscription and single issue rate. This has been possible in part by the fact that we do not accept classified advertisement over the telephone. Not only were we not getting paid for many, but at the rate of labor and postage today, it is completely impossible to include bookwork for a $1.25 advertisement. We want to encourage everyone to continue to use our space be it a display ad, a classified ad which are proven to be very well read, or just a happy ad or an announcement of some news or personal item. We will try to maintain our low rates and keep the interest high and all we ask is your cooperation. But it must be stated that we still reserve the right to refuse any item or advertisement submitted in accordance to our policy or decisions on the submitted material. So a questionable item may just go along the way side w hether cash is included or not if we feel it to not be in good or proper taste.
