Shamrocks Rally Nips Faifield In Key NSC Game The North I iberty Shamrocks uon a big Northern State Conference football battle on Saturday night at the Jackson field as they came from behind to top Fairfield's Falcons 14-8 in a real thriller. The win. number two in conference play, keeps them unbeaten in NSC action in what is starting to shape up to be a battle between New Prairie. La Ville and North Liberty, fhc overall Shamrock record jumped to 4-1 for coach Bill Farrell's hoys this season. Their defense again was the big factor is on four different occasions, they overed a fumbled football that found the bouncing ball in possession of a North Liberty defensive man rather than a Fairfield offensive player. The key recovery was the second Mike Fair made, coming late in the game and setting up the winning touchdown. The winning score came on John ' ’Hiker's only completed pass of tlic football game as the senior juarterback had missed some acton with a first half injury. How ver. he returned to the lineup to pearhead the final drive of 31 ards following Fair’s recovery. Goukcr hit end Chris Lemert with a 1" yard pass with less than three minutes remaining to break the 8 8 tic. I hen it was back to the defense igain. And once more they were ready and up to the task at hand of holding the Falcons off for the final tn to sustain a drive and get back m the game, thus wrapping up the . k lory. Fairfield won the battle of the tatistics, partially due to the fact the Shamrocks were operating a little under normal with Goukcr getting some injury rest Also, a big play by the visitors from Ilk hart Counts, a M yard run bv big Rob Kirdendorffer in the third period, put not only a lot of yards on the stats in one play, but put six big points on the board after a scoreless first half. Ihe visitors then picked up two points on a Mark Beer to lorn ( oy pass to take an 8-0 lead. This was held only for part of a period. The Shamrocks came back getting the tying points in the early fourth quarter. Tim Shreve broke into the end zone from three yards out to put the first six on the board and then he also matched this by cracking over again on a similar try •or the two extra points. This tied it at 8-8 and set the stage for the late heroics paced by the Shamrocks defense in getting the ball back for Goukcr and Company to pull out the win. Conference action continues this week end as the Shamrocks host a wrv young John Glenn team, sinless in their first five games. • his will be at 2:00 p.m on SaturHas afternoon at the North Libertv field.
