Falcons Fall To Lancers 33-6 Friday The young John Glenn Falcons lootball team, a loser for the fourth straight week and a team that isn't going to be a winning threat in most games, had a good time Friday night as they dropped a 33-6 decision. The Falcons, although losing, did move the ball somewhat and were putting everything they had into the game. It wasn't the crushing type loss they have experienced in a couple of games and one they came out of without any obvious additional injuries. The 1979 version of John Hostrawscr. short-handed from the start after their best season ever last year, suffered some key injuries in their first few games and now are fielding a squad for game competition of exactly one senior, two juniors and the rest is all sophomores and freshmen, who even though they are giving it their best, are simply too immature and inexperienced to be pushing people around. They are. however, apparently in good spirits and certainly learning with every game. Eheir record slipped to 0-4 and 0-2 m Northern State Conference play with the loss to LaVille Friday. two possessions, a punt let LaVille break the first of two big scoring plays in this game. Dan Feitz found daylight on the third play after the punt and broke free for 64 yards and a touchdown. The extra point was missed, but the Lancers led 6-0 with 4:28 left in the first period. It took a full quarter before they could punch in again, this time a shorter drive after the Falcons had been pushed deep into their own territory. Fielding a punt on the Glenn 41. it took just five plavs until Feitz crashed over again, this time from seven yards out and this time Ken Carbiener added the extra point kick and it was 13-0, the way it stayed until halftime. It was obvious in the late first half that passing was going to be the only way for Glenn to move as not only did they complete several, but the LaVille defense was having a little trouble defending and were penalized a couple of times for pass interference. I he Lancers took the second half kickoff and were stopped on the runback at their own 39 yard line. However, here they put a sustained drive on that netted 59 yards in all with a big 15 yard face mask penalty hurting Glenn along the way as LaVille had also been penalized a couple of times. How - ever. the big play again came with a long yardage situation, the Falcons secondary let Greg Rutzen get behind them on a long pass and he took it in perfect stride from quarterback Tim Dykstra, for an overall scoring play of 59 yards. Again the kick failed but the lead was 19-0. I he Falcons turned the ball back with a punt after failing to sustain a drive and an eight play drive ended up w ith Dykstra sneaking over from the one as just 2:36 remained in the third quarter. Carbiener kicked the extra point and it was 26-0. Glenn, certainly not giving up. t<x>k the next kickoff from their own 30 yard line and started a drive that eventually wt nt all the way. A23 yard pass from Mike Elkin to Jeff Tinkey ended the drive gcxxi for the Falcons score. An attempted pass for the extra points was
missed but the Falcons were on the board with almost all the last quarter remaining. Things did look up when they kicked short and recovered as Doug Miller pounced on the ball that a Lancer lineman had touched up front. However, after moving deep into Lancer territory, a fumble on a scramble by Elkin was covered by Mike Bettcher at the Glenn 9 yard line to give LaVille possession. They then ran 14 plays and sustained the drive with the reserves running about the last half dozen plays to punch it in with just 13 seconds left on the clock as Dennis Graf banged over from two yards out. Carbiener kick the point, then kicked off and time elapsed before Glenn could put the ball in play again. The Falcons traveled for 142 yards through the air in this game and it looks like they will be throwing the ball more to loosen things up a little as they mature and gain needed experience.
