School Options Being Studied At North Liberty (continued from page 1) tion would re-evaluate the educational priorities. A detailed survey will be conducted by the committee of the residents of Liberty and Greene Townships to determine the concerns regarding the schools. Ihe Citizens Committee For North Liberty/Greene Schools held a press conference Saturday aftcrnoon, September 8, after meeting following another South Bend Community School Board meeting. Ihe issue of prices for various plans released by the SBCSC Board was the matter that led to the following press release by the committee, we quote: Due to a continued lack of communication between the administration of the South Bend Community School Corporation and our committee, the failure of the school administration to provide our community with any concrete and definitive proposals for our schools and, thirdly, recent statements published in the South Bend Tribue and attributed to school administration officials, our committee is becoming increasingly less and less optimistic about the prospects of accomplishing the educational objectives and goals of our community as outlined in our prior presentation to the school board on August 20, 1979. At that meeting, we indicated that we were not satisfied with the present educational programs and physical facilities at either North Liberty High School or North Liberty Elementary. We agreed with the administration that the instructional programs and physical facilities at both schools were inadequate. Secondly, we stated that we were urgently concerned about the deplorable and hazardous conditions existing in the North Liberty Elementary School. Thirdly, we indicated that we felt our community desired not only a local community high school but also a K-12 quality, integrated educational experience for our children but that we wanted experience to occur within our community and not elsewhere.

Ihe only communication which we have received from the school administration since the August 20 meeting was the last-minute decision on the part of the administration to release to the school board at its Sept. 4 meeting a Cost Estimate Report, an item which was not even contained on the original agenda for the meeting. Having now had an opportunity to review the administration's Cost Estimate Report, it is the position of the committee that the administration's estimates are unrealistic and grossly inaccurate. In particular, the committee feels that the proposed facilities, as outlined in the estimates, are totally inappropriate for our children's educational needs and suggest a dire need for the administration to reevaluate their educational priorities. Once again, we would welcome an opportunity to discuss the estimates with the administration and provide them with what we feel are viable alternative solutions to the problems which presently exist in our schools. Nevertheless, based on these developments and based on a prior unanimous decision of our committee. we have begun an investigation of other possible viable alternatives to meeting our educational goals and objectives. First, we intend to study the feasibility, financial and otherwise, of creating our ow n community school corporation. Secondly, we intend to conduct an in-depth investigation of the possibility of our community merging with other adjoinging school corporations. Under either of these proposals, we shall seek to retain the existing schools within our community and, more importantly, improve their curriculum and physical plant, both of which have been sadly neglected for the past sixteen years. In the course of these ivestigations, as well as our continued efforts to work with the administration and/or school board of the South Bend Community School Corporation, we shall hold public meetings within our community in the near future and advise the residents of our progress. In addition. we have formulated fact-find-ing groups which will conduct indepth investigations of the educational. financial, legal and other related aspects involved in these alternatives. Finally, we intend to conduct a

detailed survey of the residents within Liberty and Greene townships so as to determine their concerns, thoughts and desires regarding these critically important matters. In the interim, we remain trustrated by the apparent inaction of the school administration, particularly in the face of the fact, ad mitted by the administration, that the instructional programs and physical plant at North Liberty High School and Elementary School are inadequate and thus, our children are being deprived of equal educational opportunities. We sincerely feel that we must not leave any stone unturned in our efforts to remedy the existing situation. End quote.
