Nelson, lownship Trustee Shamrocks Win First; Top River Forest Ihe North Liberty Shamrocks rambled to their first victory of the young 1979 fixithall season Friday night as a steady hard-nosed ground game was responsible for a 2 7 -9 victory over the River Forest Ingots at the Lake Countv school's field. A disciplined ball control game was carried out throughout by the Shamrocks with fumbles being about the only blemish on their record for the night. Ihe win evened their record at 1-1 while the host team Uxik their second loss of the young season. The kick for the extra point failed, but the Ingots were leading 6-0 in the first period. Then the Libertv offense began to grind it out. Ihe steadv into the line running resulted in their first touchdown in the second quarter as Tim Shreve pounded over from one yard out. John Gouker kicked the extra point and the Shamrocks led 7-6. Ihe hosts were not done in this half as they moved to within field goal range as J<h* Laas kicked one of 23 yards after the Shamrocks had stopped their drive short of a first down or touchdown. This three pointer made it 9-7 at halftime. Ihe second half was all North Libertv Ihe steadv ball control game not only controlled the tempo. but resulted in three ShamriKk touchdowns. Ihe go-ahead score was recorded in the third period as quarterback Gouker was able to sneak over from the one to cap a sustained drive. He kicked the point and it w as 14-9. Ihe clinchers came in the final stanza. Steve Shonkwiler scored on a three yard run and after a run for two points failed, Shreve got his second touchdown of the night to go with a 125 yard gained night to put the icing on the cake. He plunged over from one vard again to finish it out with Gouker's third accurate extra point kick closing out all scoring 2 7 -9. Ihe Shamrocks will play at home again this week with a Saturday afternoon date with Jimtown opening their Northern State Conference play.
