Falcons Drop 33-20 Game At Pioneer Friday The John Glenn Falcons, a very young team themselves, went against Pioneer on Friday night on the Panthers home field at Royal Center, Indiana. The Pioneer club is in its first year of varsity football after a successful climb through a beginning program in which their team has never been a losing squad for their respective seasons. A strong second half broke open a 14-14 halftime tie to help the Panthers roll to their 33-20 victory. Ihe loss was the Falcons’ second in two starts while Pioneer evened their varsity record at 1-1 JG Statistics P 5 First Downs 11

A short pass over the middle from Greg Brovoid to Jeff Tinkey found the sophomore wide receiver running 49 yards for a touchdown to get the scoring started. Mark Izdepski. veteran senior fullback and linebacker, kicked the extra point and the Falcons led 7 0.
I his lead was short lived, how - ever, as l/depski kicked off to the Panthers and their offensive star. Perry Nethercutt, fielded the short kick in a group and is often the case when he broke free he was behind most of the wall coming downfield. He then legged it all the way. 67 yards in all, for the Panthers’ first touchdown. However, a run for two points failed and the Falcons held the lead by a slim point. 7-6. The second score for either team didn’t come until the second period when Izdepski, on his way to a good offensive and defensive night, climaxed a drive with a four yard plunge into the end zone to up the lead to 13-6 and then 14-6 as he kicked his successful extra point. I his followed an interception of a Nethercutt pass by Brovoid, one of only four seniors on the Glenn team. Once again, however, the Falcons enjoyed the wider margin only a short while. The Panthers went on the prowl again and this was ♦ DR. capped with a Nethercutt to Brian Spencer pass good tor 11 yards and their second score. This was followed by a successful Nethercutt run tor the two extra points to knot it at 14 all. the wav it remained until halftime. Ihe second halt found the hosts dominating play. Part of the reason simple was that the voting Fai con team, without much depth, was suffering from enough humps and bruises for injuries that were sen ous enough to limit plae of front line players. Ihe depth just isn’t there vet with the freshmen and sophomore dominated team and the loss of key players on this very hot and muggy night had its effect. The hosts wasted little time after receiving the second half kickoff. On the fourth plas from scrim mage. Nethercutt again broke loose, this time on a run that resulted in a total of 66 vards and the tie-breaking score. He simpls scrambled free and outran a relatively slow Falcon team. Joe Pasquale kicked the extra point and verv quicklv the host team led 2114. A Glenn error, a wild pitchout on the next series of plays, gave the ball back to the Panthers. Thev took advantage of this as thev capped the short drive with a 28 yard run by Chris Franklin. This time the extra point kick was blocked but a 13 point margin was enjoyed by Pioneer. 27-14. The Falcons turned the ball back to Pioneer once again, but shortls after Brovoid had another of four pass interceptions with a long return to the Pioneer 17 to set up the final Falcon score. Bro void suffered a knee injury on the play and sophomore quarterback Mike Elkin took over, pitched back to Tinkey who lobbed a pass into the end zone to the waiting hands of Jeff Fansler, who hauled it in for the score. This covered 22 yards as a penalty had cost the Falcons five prior to the play. The kick for the all-important extra point failed, but the Falcons were back in the game. However, it was not to be the Falcons night, but the Panthers as thev sealed up the victory with a
