Charles Cripe, Jr. Grand Marshal At Historic Days Admiration and pride are obvious when you talk to the Walkerton Volunteer Firemen about their former fire chief, Charles Cripe, Jr. It doesn't take long to decided why. Mr. Cripe was named this week as the Grand Fire Marshal for the second annual New Carlisle Fireman’s competition. Mr. Cripe retired from the department in 1973 after 42 years of service. Forty of those years were served as the fire chief. Mr. Cripe does not dwell on the longitude of his career instead he quickly points out to his listeners that his department was always one where there was always great cooperation among the men and he quickly adds, great cooperation from the town board of Walkerton. The feeling is mutual as his many friends are quick to tell of his deeds and devotions. The Walkerton Volunteer Fire Department nominated their former chief and listed his accomplishments as not only as the many years served on the department, but also, the many years he has played Santa to their children, the 52 years to the U. S. Postal Department and the responsibilities he has undertaken since his retirement to serve on the Advisory Board of Lincoln Township. Mr. Cripe and his wife, Leah, have raised eight children, one of whom is now serving on the Walkerton Fire Department. Mr. Cripe will be the Grand Marshal of the Historical Days Parade on Saturday, in New Carlisle, beginning at 12:00 noon.
