Energy Education Curriculum In All Schools A complete energy education curriculum, produced by the Indiana Department of Public Instruction and funded through the Energy Group of the Indiana Department of Commerce, has been made available to all elementary schools in the state. The announcement was made jointly on July 10 by Lieutenant Governor Robert D. Orr and State School Superintendent Harold H. Negley. The energy awareness curriculum for students from kindergarten through sixth grade is the first phase of a project which, when completed, also will feature teaching materials geared for junior and senior high school students. According to research done by the Department of Public Insturction. Indiana is believed to be the first state to develop a comprehensive elementary energy curriculum designed for integration into existing classroom instruction. "A unique feature of Indiana's program is that it offers materials for a sustained period of instruction instead of listing a limited number of activities, as is comong among other energy education materials." said Orr. who is also director of the Indiana Department of Commerce. "By using Indiana's curriculum, a student will be able to participate in new energy awareness activities several times each week from kindergarten through sixth grade." State Superintendent Negley noted that the curriculum is part of a joint effort by his department and the Indiana Department of Commerce "to foster conservation so that it permeates the thinking and feeling of all Hoosiers. It is necessary for our young people to understand that principal energy problems and the alternatives through which Americans can cope with those energy problems. Each pupil needs to have a part in that coping process." said Negley.

Approximately 500 teachers were involved in developing the elementary curriculum which was funded during the 1978-79 school year by a $ 7 1.129 U.S. Department of Energy grant through the Department of Commerce Energy Group. The Energy Group has made available $174,038 to the Department of Public Instruction for development of instructional materials for the middle grades during the 1979-80 school year. A curriculum for high school students is in the planning stages. The curriculum is being written by a team of writers from Indiana University, who are under contract to the Department of Public Instruction and are receiving direction from the department's Division of Curriculum. The chief writer is Judith Gillespie, formerly of the Social Studies Development Center at IU and now with the university's "Workshop on Political Theory and Policy Analysis." In announcing the completion of the project’s first phase, the Lieutenant Governor noted that the "forceful education" of adults by their children has been an unexpected bonus of the project which was field-tested with about 200 students in Indianapolis, Griffith. Gary. New Harmony and Michigan City. "Youngsters prove to be surprisingly effective taskmasters when it comes to insisting that their parents adopt improved energy conservation habits," said Orr. "Kids can cause parents to flick off light switches and turn down thermostats as a byproduct of their own training in this new energy awareness program. "Everyone wins in this program to educate citizens about energy." Orr added, "since use of energy is, and will continue to be. vital to maintaining and improving the quality of our lives." Negley said he believes the instructional materials, in concert with the commerce department's efforts among adults, will provide schools with a leadership role in changing both attitudes and behaviors related to energy problems.

The Department of Public Instruction. in late June, mailed 2.2(H) complete curriculum guides to every public and nonpublic school principal in the state. In addition to requests already being received from teachers during the summer months, requests for the materials also have been received from other states and from countries such as Italy and Malaysia. Department personnel have informed approximately 1.000 educators of the materials through 25 presentations given recently throughout the state and region.
