farming for several years and is retired from the LaPorte County Highway Department. They have one son, Ora, of Medford. Wisconsin, also 10 grandchildren and four great-grand-children. all of Wisconsin. Hank Whitmer 1 Lucky Farmer Hank Whitmer, formerly of North Liberty, supervisor of student services at the Upper Wabash Career Center and farmer, considers himself to be one lucky farmer. Hank borrowed a tractor from a neighbor. Ralph Murphy and Murphy’s son, Todd, who is 12. to put up some hay in his barn. With the hay wagon loaded Hank drove the tractor into the upper level of his barn when the floor gave way under J the left rear tire and the tractor completely overturned before landing 12 feet below on straw and manure. Todd saddled on a fender, leaped to a stack of hay bales before the tractor flipped into the hole. Mrs. Murphy, w'ho was 500 yards up County Road 50E, looked towards the Whitmer barn and saw her husband’s tractor tumble, she expected the worst. She called the ambulance service of which her husband being a firefighter, operates. An ambulance was dispatched with Mr. Murphy in attendance. When arriving at the Whitmer barn, Murphy walked right by his son Todd not recognizing him, he was sure he was trapped down below. Todd was sitting on a bale of hay crying, and he hobbled over to the hole in the barn floor and said, “I’m up here.” Whitmer said he had a lot of time to think during the accident, it seemed as if everything was happening in slow motion. As he was going down backwards, he said he thought my God, I’m going to die. He then realized that he wasn’t killed and then the thought of the tractor catching on fire occured to him. The motor was still running and the tractor was in gear, but then the carburetor stopped getting gas, and the tractor died. Whitmer felt fine physically as he looked for Todd after pulling himself out from under the tractor. But after about five minutes, Whitmer said, he encountered difficulty in breathing.
Ambulance attendant Hart and Murphy took Whitmer to the hospital where physicians discovered broken ribs. One lucky farmer! With 500 bales of hay still in the field the neighbors pitched in and stashed the remaining crop in the barn before rain hit the area.
