A GREAT FIRST YEAR The release recently of an additional $1.3 million for expenditures in the Potato Creek State Recreation Area, just east of North Liberty, will futher expand what has come into being very rapidly, one of Indiana's most successful parks. The very new location, really located in the center of a heavily populated area in northern Indiana, the use of the new facility has been great in its really first year. In fact, it was so well received that the attendance was the fourth highest of all Indiana facilities. The bulk of Northern Indiana had been pretty well passed by in past years with most of the state facilities in the much lighter populated areas of southern Indiana where, true, some very beautiful and natural land was preserved, but they simple didn't come that directly in contact with the people, the people had to travel to come in contact with them. The addition of Potato Creek did make three major facilities across the northern part of the state with Pokagon and The Dunes on either side, but also with the Fort Wayne and more heavily populated areas of the northeastern corner taking good advantage of the Pokagon facility and the Dunes certainly in a populated area of the Calumet district, plus both surely lured a lot of out-of-staters as they both were close to heavily populated areas of other states. We are pleased to see the rapid success of Potato Creek and know that the legislators in this part of Indiana are going to fight hard to continue to improve and add to this facility. Especially important is s <ch as this near home if the energy crunch continues and/or gets worse, which seems to be the continued pattern. The addition of more facilities, especially those that accomodate families, certainly will be a big asset to the Potato Creek facility and to all of us in this locality.
