Craig DeMyer. Secretary Walkerton Economic Development Commission ji4 NIPSCO Petitions To Recover Increased Costs Northern Indiana Public Service Company on June 8 filed a petition with the Public Service Commission of Indiana to permit NIPSCO to track an additional annual increase in purchased gas costs of $766,577. NIPSCO filed for the additional increase in gas costs, above those requested in its petition filed on May 24, 1979. after notification of the increase by Midwestern Gas Transmission Company, one of its five pipeline suppliers. Upon approval of Midwestern's increased rates by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, and approval of NIPSCO’s request by the Public Service Commission of Indiana, the average NIPSCO residential customer using natural gas for spaceheating (160,800 cubic feet per year) will experience an increase of 49 cents a year or a little more than 4 cents a month, in addition to the previously requested increase. The average NIPSCO residential customer using natural gas for purposes other than spaceheating (38,200 cubic feet annually) would pay about 10 cents a year more or about I cent a month. Adjustments in gas rates to NIPSCO customers, usually upward and sometimes downward, have occurred and will continue to occur as rates charged NIPSCO by its pipeline suppliers change, as they have and will under the provisions of the National Energy Act. This is the eight purchased gas adjustment filed by NIPSCO in 1979. Five have been increases and three were decreases. The net effect of these filings to the average NIPSCO residential customer using natural gas for spaceheating and other purposes is an annuan increase of $57.57 — from $425.85 at the beginning of the year to $483.42, should this petition be approved as filed. NIPSCO said that in spite of rising costs, natural gas continues to be the least expensive fuel for homeheating in northern Indiana. The utility also explained that it does not realize one cent of profit from these tracking adjustments. The money goes directly to the suppliers to pay for the increased cost of natural gas delivered to NIPSCO as authorized by FERC.
