The American Legion Auxiliary says the first national Poppy Day in the United States was held in 1921. The first memorial poppies distributed by The American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary following World War 1 were made of silk by French widows and war orphans. This action was taken by Ihe American Legion at its National Convention in Cleveland. Ohio. September 27-29. 1920. The American Legion Auxiliary adopted the poppy as its Memorial Flower at the organization’s first convention in Kansas City in 1921. After taking this action the Auxiliary pledged that 100 percent of the Poppy Day contributions would go to welfare work for servicemen and members of their families. The American Legion Auxiliary, in order to protect the memorial poppv from commercialism, adopted a national poppy program at the St. Paul.
