Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Onika. Mrs. Violet Drake. William, Albert and Dorothea Brenner attended the reception for new members at the Scotish Rite Cathedral in South Bend on April 1. Arthur Onika and Albert Brenner are members of the Scottish Rite Choir that furnished the entertainment. Mrs. Eula Northam came home last week from a visit with her daughter, Mrs. John Neil, and family, in Bedford. Indiana. Dr. and Mrs. John Guttman and Elizabeth, of Wakarusa, and Mrs. Bertha Urbin were Friday evening dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Urbin. This was a birthday dinner honoring Mrs. Guttman's birthday. On Tuesday evening last week, Mrs. Garland Lawrence entertained the members of the single ladies club in her home, beginning the evening with a delicious ham dinner at six o'clock. After the dinner and visitation the evening was spent playing bridge, with prizes for all. Mr. and Mrs. William DePoy, of Koontz Lake, were Saturday evening dinner guests of his brother and wife. Mr. and Mrs. George DePoy. in Culver. Mrs. Charles Hasse and son Charles, of San Diego, California, were here to visit her mother and her husband. Mr. and Mrs. Louis Houser, from Monday till Friday. Mr. and Mrs. William Clark and Mr. and Mrs. Dale Ullery were Sunday evening visitors of Mr. and Mrs. Agnew Ludwig. Twenty-five ladies from Walkerton attended the state bowling tournament for women bowlers over the week end in Indianapolis. Mr. and Mrs. William Dickson, of Glenview, Illinois; Mr. Joe Bankv and Mrs. Mary Robertson, of Lafayette. Ind., were Saturday and Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. William Dickson at Koontz Lake. A group of 16 Starke County Senior Citizens took a trip on their new bussette from Koontz Lake to Michigan City last Friday. They enjoyed their day at the Marquette Mall. They left the lake at 10:00 a.m. and returned at 3:30 p.m.

Everyone enjoyed the day and plans are being made now for another trip. Mr. and Mrs. James Versluis. of Allendale. Michigan, were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Kuklinski. of Koontz Lake. Mr. and Mrs. William Erzig will be hosts for the Koontz Lake Conservation Club dinner meeting Saturday evening in the club house. Come enjoy the evening. There will be no meeting on April 14 because of Easter, however, members should keep in mind there will be a Hawaiian party on April 28 which everyone will enjoy. Jex? Stahly, 605 Monroe Street, is back home after undergoing surgery at the Osteopathic Hospital, South Bend. March 28. On Saturday afternoon, a birthday party was held for Mr. and Mrs Eugene Bowers at the home of their daughter. Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Hostetler. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Michael Swaine of Bloomington; Mr. and Mrs. Daryl Bowers and Mandy and Mrs. Alta Bowers. A cook out was enjoyed by all with ice cream and cake also being served. Ramona Bowers Swaine has accepted a position as Assistant Professor of Statistics at CarnegieMellon University, in Pittsburgh, beginning in August. She will complete her doctorate in July at Indiana University, Bloomington, where she also earned the B.A. and M.A. degrees in mathematics. She is a 1971 graduate of John Glenn High School. Ramona is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Bowers, route 3, Walkerton. Last Saturday Mrs. Charles Shogren, Mrs. Russell Smith and Mr. George Pfeiffer, all of Koontz Lake, spent Saturday in and around Chicago visiting relatives. Mr. Pfeiffer stopped in Griffith to visit his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Jerome, and their families. He also attended an installation meeting of the O.E.S. where he is a member. Mrs. Shogren attended a retirement party for her sister in Oak Brook and the party was held on Saturday evening at Andy’s Steak House. Mrs.
Smith was in Streamwood. Illinois, and attended a bridal shower for her nephew's bride to be. This was held on Sunday afternoon. They returned home Monday. A card party was held in the Johnson Township Community Building Friday night with a good crowd present with the proceeds all given to the 4-H girls and 4-H boys clubs of that tow nship. Free coffee was served and other refreshments and pop was sold for a small fee to help the 4-H Clubs, and everyone leaving saying they had a good time. Mrs. Newton Williams returned March 31 from a three month visit with her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John Evans, in Sherman. Illinois. Mrs. Williams reports that Mrs. Evans, who has been seriously ill, is improving. Master Stephen Bella, son of Mr. and Mrs. David Bella, of North Liberty, underwent a tonsilectomy, Monday in the South Bend Osteopathic Hospital. Mrs. Charles Bandendistel received an invitation to a "One Man Art Show” given by her grandson, James C. Sicner, of Denver. Colorado. at the library at the University of Huston. Texas, on April 7. He is the son of Mrs. Edith Sicner. of Denver. Mr. and Mrs. Gene Gerber entertained at a birthday dinner Sunday for their daughter, Mrs. Bryon (Rosalie) Gerhart. Those attending were Mr. Bryon Gerhart and Laden, and Miss Vicki Wallace. Mrs. John (Nancy) Turner and daughter. Diana, flew into Indianapolis on Saturday from their home in Laurel, Maryland, which is 70 miles from Three Mile Island. Pennsylvania, where she was picked up by her parents. Mr. and Mrs. Branson Hiatt. She will be here for an indefinatc time. Mr. and Mrs. Mike Moyer, of LaPorte, were Monday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. John Guttman. Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. James Patterson and family were Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Divine. Mr. Amel Schultz, Mrs. Bernadette Davis and Mr. and Mrs. Ross Divine and family, of Plymouth. The birthdays of Kelly Patterson and Gail Divine were celebrated. Mr. Warner Clark returned home on Monday evening from a month's vacation spent at Lake Placid. Florida. Mrs. Clark returned last week. Their daughter, Mrs. Lee Zumbaugh and daughter, spent last week in Florida with Mr. Clark and returned with him. Julia A. Hite Named Officer Wife Os Year Mrs. Julia A. Hite, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Limerick. North Liberty, was selected recently by the 390th Strategic Missile Wing as its nomination for Officer Wife of the Year at DavisMonthan Air Force Base, Tucson, Arizona. Her nomination was based on her outstanding contributions to the base and local communities. Her diligent efforts have improved the operation of the Base Thrift Shop. She voluntarily worked over 400 hours fulfilling responsibilities. first as a Day Chairman, supervising the daily opera tion of the Thrift Shop. and. since June 1978. as overall program co-ordinator. Her hard work and enthusiasm helped ease problems of relocation when the Thrift Shop was moved in February 1978. For her successful accomplishment of all these responsibilities, she was selected Volunteer of the Quarter for the second quarter of 1978. Since assuming duties as coordinator, she has encouraged new volunteers to participate and has instituted several new policies to improve management of the shop. Among her initiatives were establishment of the limits of items in
order to provide a broader selection of goods, clarification of the contractual arrangement with shop customers, implementation of a time-card system to keep better track of volunteer hours and the development of a catalog file to control inventory. In addition to her Thrift Shop duties. Mrs. Hite contributes to the Hermanos Program. Hermanos was originally set up to provide aid to disadvantaged families on the south and west sides of the city. As 1 hrift Shop coordinator, she sends unsold but usable goods to Hermanos for distribution to needy individuals. She has been active in squadron affairs, serving as squadron caller and keeping squadron wives informed of social, organizational and base matters. Base policy changes and recreational opportunities are some of the topics covered by these calls. Mrs. Hite is also heavily involved in church activities in the local community. She was volunteer worker in the church's Vacation Bible School in August of 1978 and frequently teaches Sunday School classes. She arranged a tour of the base fire station for pre-school children in August to emphasize the need for safety and hazards associated with fires. Despite her busy schedule she enjoys doing embroidery and crewelwork and is an active bowler and tennis player. Mrs. Hite’s enthusiasm and hard work have made lasting contributions to the life of the base and surrounding community. Her husband is Capt. Bruce E. Hite, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bryce E. Hite, of Markle. Indiana. Julia and Bruce have a son. Eric, who is four and a half years old. They reside at 8456 E. 23rd Street. Tucson. Arizona. Special Programs Planned For Coming Meeting Special interest will be given to several programs of the American Legion Auxiliary when Orville Easterday Unit 189 will meet at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 5. Two of the programs relate to children those being Children and Youth and Junior Activities. Each year a foreign country is studied under the Foreign Relations program.

this year the country being Bolivia. A narrative of the country will be given at the meeting by Mrs. John Johnson, who will also serve as hostess for the evening. Preliminary plans for Poppy Day, which is in May, will begin with the April meeting. Yearly reports of the past year's activities will soon be made and in order to receive all the recognition that is due. Auxiliary members are urged to report the many worthwhile volunteer services they give to the community. Please call 586-3516 to report any activities. Nomination of officers for the coming year will be held with election to be at the May meeting. All members arc asked to and urged to attend these meetings and participate in the many programs which the Auxiliary has available. COMMUNITY CLUB TO MEET THIS FRIDAY The Walkerton Women's Community Club will meet at the Community Building in Walkerton at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, April 6. Rev. William Hughes, pastor of the United Methodist Church. Walkerton, will be the guest speaker. Hostesses will be Mrs. William Hughes. Mrs. Allen Seaholm. Mrs. Ward Awald. Mrs. Eli Sohat and Mrs. John Guttman. For the April 20th meeting of the club the hostesses will furnish a salad bar and the time is 12:30 p.m. instead of 1:00 as indicated in our club book. RESIDENT ASSISTANT Arden V. Smith, route 2, Walkerton. was selected as a residece assistant for Jones Hall on the campus of Indiana State University. Terre Haute. He will serve the remainder of this academic year and all of next year. As residence assistant he is to act as a councclor and supervisor for the men living on the second floor of the hall. Smith is now a junior majoring in education; industrial arts and physical education and served as vicepresident of Jones Hall before his selection as a residence assistant. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. Raymond V. Smith. NOTICE The Koontz Lake Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary will hold their monthly meeting at the Fire House on Wednesday. April 11, at 7:30 p.m.
