WALKERTON TOWN BOARD NEWS The Walkerton Town Board met in regular session on Monday, April 2, with O. C. White, Jack Rizek and Gladys Prentis in attendance. The minutes of the March 21 meeting were approved as were claims 186 through 212. Several matters of interest concerning the Fire Department were discussed as Gene Brems. chief, gave his monthly report for March consisting of water pumping, two assists, one car fire, one grass fire and two training meetings with a total of 359 man hours. They also spent SIO.OO on equipment for the month. The chief reported on the trouble with the city truck and that the cost of repairs was $107.50. He also asked that the fire department be consulted concerning the location of the new building to house the ambulance. He was told that the department could attend the next ambulance board meeting when the decision on the location will be an issue. The 1937 pumper that was hit and damaged during the flooding of Glenn-L Estates, is in the hands of the insurance company. The chief asked if the fire department could be given the extra radio that the police department has. John McGovern announced that the fire department received a grant for $5,423.00 to use on equipment. The town will now have to come up with $2,741.00. The monthly report of the Walkerton Police Department was submitted by acting chief John Marek. The resignation of Lewis Whitaker as chief was read and accepted by the board. Applications are being accepted and the board asked that the applicants be interviewed personally, the possible date being April 9, at 7:30 p.m. There was a request made for reimbursement of clothing and equipment from the women work ing with the police department but this request was denied by the board. Maxwell Kring will now be working full time on the Walkerton Police Department. Marvin Williams, the utilities superintendent, reported to the board of the delay on the water main extension. At the present time all the materials for this project have not come in. Williams stated his departments would like Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. April 10. II and 12, for the special trash pick-up to remove appliances and other larger items. The board agreed to these dates and would like to encourage the public to plan for these day as the time for the major trash pick up. Williams also stated that he would like the man to be hired for the parks to be hired as soon as pos sible because there is necessary work to be done at this time in order to get the parks in shape for the summer. A contract was approved and signed by the board with Trash-A-Way for the continuing weekly trash pick-ups tn Walkerton. An animal control contract was also agreed upon and signed by the board. Due to illness. Wayne Seiders. an engineer from Clyde E. Williams Associates, was not present to present his findings on the Glenn L Estates water problem. The Cub Scouts Blue and Gold Banquet was held on Friday evening. March 30, with a very good turn out for the carry-in dinner. The invocation was given by Chris Christensen. The Cubs received their Bobcat badges. Plans for a Pinewood Derby were discussed and tickets for the annual Scout Show were distributed for the scouts to sell. The Cubs have two dens, the den mothers are Sharon Drews and Vai Barden. The cubmaster is Dr. Carl Christensen. attorney representing the residents 1 of Glenn-L, was present. He stated he had been in contact with Mr. Seiders and appreciated the courtesy extended to him. There are a few questions he wanted to present to the board. He asked if the survey had been completed by the engineering firm which the answer was negative at this time and should be completed by the April 16 meeting night. He also questioned draining across State Road 23 to the east and wondered if this was known by Mr. Seiders. He further asked if the town attornev. Devore Goheen, had looked into the possibility of the town being responsible for any liability tor damages done. Mr. Goheen said he had not checked this matter but would do so if and when the matter arose. Allsop also questioned the annexation of Glenn-L to the tow n. The board informed him that it was a matter of record and could be inspected by the public. Bob Sante, from Hughes Associates. was present to submit a resolution to the board desiring to enter into a binding contract with the State Planning Service Agency for the 701 Planning Grant. The board agreed to this. Sante also presented an affirmative action plan to be approved, which was also accepted by the board. The next regular board meeting will be on Monday. April 16. at the town council room.

Todd Wathen Recording Is Now Available “Love From Me To You, Todd," is the name of the record cut by Todd Wathen, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Wathen, Walkerton, in January and there are now some copies available. If you wish to purchase the record call 586-7125 and they are ss.ooeach. Todd is a senior at John Glenn High School and has always been interested in music. The record contains 10 of his songs, singing his own words and playing his own melodies on the piano. On the recording, seven other local people serve as back-up and accompaniment for Todd. Many husbands prefer clinging gowns — the kind that cling for at least five years.
PLANNING COMMISSION TO MEET TUESDAY The Walkerton Area Planning Commission will meet on Tuesday , April 10. at 7:30 p.m. at the Town Council Room to consider the request for the vacation of the alley at Mahoney-Mann Chevrolet-Olds-mobile Co. The public is invited. CAR WASH SET The North Liberty Cub Scout Pack 241 is sponsoring a car wash on Saturday, April 14 from 8:30 a.m. til ? at the North Liberty United Methodist Church parking lot. The cost is $1.50 per car and $2.50 for trucks and vans. NOTICE OF MEETING The P-L-J Athletic Boosters will meet on Wednesday. April 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the John Glenn High School library. No seller ever admits that prices are getting too high.

Registration For Jr. League In North Liberty Registration for Junior League teams in North Liberty for boys grade five through seven and girls grades five through eight will be held this Saturday, April 7, at the North Liberty Community Building between 12:00 noon and 2:30 p.m. Fees will be $5.00 and all students from North Liberty and Greene Schools are eligible. Wednesday and Thursday. April 10. 11 and 12. All persons wishing to get rid of appliances or furniture are asked to call the clerk's office and register their location for the pick up. The telephone number is 586-3711. P-L-J SCHOOL BOARD NEWS The Polk-Lincoln-Johnson School Board met in regular session on Tuesday. April 3. Cost figures for the renovation of the Urey Middle School in the spring of 1980 that will also meet requirements to comply with the Handicap Act in all three school buildings were announced. The result of the feasibility study made by K M Associates of Elkhart disclosed an estimated figure of $1,500,000 was determined. The next meeting of the board on Tuesday. April 17, a review of the construction costs will be held and a discussion on ways to finance the project. The board encourages patrons to attend this meeting in order to become more knowledgeable about the project and its costs. The board sold bus number P to Joe Snyder for S"00. Four persons had bid to purchase the bus. A conference request was granted to Dennis Rippy, assistant football coach at John Glenn High School to attend a football clinic at Purdue University on April 6. Jim Waller, basketball coach at John Glenn High School, discussed the past basketball season with the board ami expressed his plans for , next year's program. The next meeting of the school ’ board will be Tuesday . April P. at , 7:45 p.m. in the library at John Glenn High School. Prior to the meeting there will be an executive session at 7:00 p.m. for the purpose of discussing upcoming contract negotiations. St. Joe County Police Call Is Now Toll Free The St. Joseph County Police I may be reached by dialing a tollfree number as of Monday according to information received from United Telephone Company of Indiana. The number is 65*6-3331. United serves Walkerton, North Liberty and Lakeville.
