La Ville Free Throws Topple Falcons 57-48 For the LaVille lancers Friday night their theme song could be "The Best Things In Life Are Free" . . . 31 of them to be exact. The John Glenn and LaVille matchup in the semi final action of the 19'Q Ph mouth Sectional, found the not vers offensive-oriented LaVille team hitting 31 free throws and adding this to a very mediocre total of 13 baskets, using their defense to hand the Falcons the 5“-48 defeat. This ended a very trying season for John Glenn 4-16 as they bow ed out of action w ith this record for first year Glenn coach Jim Waller. LaVille advanced their record to 12-10 and assured themselves of a winning record as well as moving to the final game of the sectional against the red-hot Argos Dragons. The disappointing fact about the 4-16 record is that Glenn played a very dominate "losing schedule" this season. W'ith the Lancers moving to a slight winning margin, thev represent the only team in the Northern State Conference to finish above .500 . . . that being just one game over the even mark. Add to it the Falcons outside competition found only Argos. Clay. OregonDavis and South Central with winning records for the year. Add also. a rebuilding program really didn't get going that well as not very many boys answered the call to play ball this year w ith at various points in the season only 16 or 17 boys, including three freshmen, made up the varsity and B-Teams. A lot of work still lies ahead to get Glenn back on winning ways. This was another year, which has been the pattern lately, that the Falcons played a "losing schedule." The Friday game started with the Lancers approaching the game a little different than in the Falcons' 61-50 win a few weeks earlier. The LaVille team is small, not powerful at all and more defensive-minded than offensive. However, they did appear to want to take the ball

inside a little more and at least look lor the basket more than in their first meeting. An 11 footer bv Kevin McGriff opened the scoring and Gary Sas ill then hit one of two from the 15 foot stripe. Bob Mun cie. one of six seniors on coach Waller’s roster, put Glenn on the board with a 10 footer but Tim Dykstra, the real catalyst for LaVille. hit a long baseline shot and Chris Cox added one of two from the line for a 6-2 lead before two minutes had passed. The Lancers then went dry for a couple of minutes while Tom Mixite picked up an errant ball at mid-court and drove for a solo lav-in. Kris Tuttle was next with a lav-in to tie the score, but this was to be Tuttle's only basket of the night. Savill again hit two from the line as the quicker LaVille players were making things happen, especially after suckering the Falcon defense with little fakes before making a move. Savill then drilled a nine footer and the Lancers took a lead they were to hold until the early second half. By the end of the first period. Craig Ochs had hit two baskets and Rob Moore one to offset a basket by McGriff and one of tw o from the line by Savill as the Lancers escaped with a 13-12 lead. The second quarter found LaVille threatening to pull away early and they are not a team to score freely or give up points easily. Steve Wicks hit one of two from the line and then Dykstra added two more single pointers. He then tipped in a missed shot and Cox drilled a 13 footer from the lane as the Lancers moved out front by eight. 20-12. Ochs broke the streak with a lay-in but Wicks hit two more one-point-ers as he came off the bench to give the Lancers some muscle underneath. His two free throws were followed by one of two by Rob Moore, but Ochs, who once again was carrying the Glenn load, popped a jumper from 15 foot. SaviH canned a 17 footer and Wicks moved to the line again for two more points as the Lancers were now up by nine. 26-17 with 2:30 left in the first half. However, this was the start of a streak by Glenn that not only put
them ahead but looked as if they would dominate play for quite some time. Both teams were suffering from personal foul trouble, hut 1 a Ville continued to attack these players when they were in the game while Glenn didn't work on McGriff and Savill as much as was needed Rick Vanc/a hit his first basket on a seven foot bank shot and Ochs then was accurate on two in a row to trim the lead to three. Savill hit one of two charity pitches before the half ended with the Lancers clinging to a 27-23 lead although Glenn had just run off three baskets and looked like they were moving. This trend continued as the second half got underway. Rob Moore was first with a rebound lav-in and then it was Tom Moore with a short left baseline popper. Vanc/a broke the 27 all tic with two free throws and Tuttle followed with two more as Glenn was controlling the tempo of the game at this point. McGriff broke the Lancers dry spell with a lay-in. but Tom Moore popped another short shot as he was being defensed heavily to his right side and was totally contained on the outside. Savill followed with a 16 footer but Vanc/a first hit one of two from the line and then a lay -in as play was loose and ragged for a spell, but the Falcons were moving out. Dvkstra got one of tw o from the line to finish a meager five point quarter for LaVille and Ochs put two Glenn charity shots in with :42 left to make it Falcons 38, Lancers 32 with eight minutes left in regulation play. This was the beginning of the end. The Lancers came out moving the ball a little better and of course, that was to draw fouls from the Glenn defense as they have succumbed to every team this year that was content enough to move the hall around and through the Falcon defense. Dvkstra was first, hitting two free throws but the steadv Ochs matched these points with a short jumper. Dykstra then hit a medium range baseline shot, and then the two teams traded two free throws each, a pair by Kevin Foster for LaVille while Greg Gratner and Muncie each got one
for Glenn. Muncie's drawing McGriff's fifth foul with 4:32 left to play. LaVille then took over. Trailing 42-38. they ran off nine straight points before Glenn broke a dry spell. C raig Miller took a super feed from Foster for a lay-in and Savill knotted the count with a steal and driving lay-in. Dykstra pushed the Lancers in front with a 16 foot baseline jumper and Wicks drew Tuttle's fifth foul with 2:48 left and hit one of two. He again was hammered and hit two time at the 2:08 mark before Steve Hardestv finally broke the Glenn streak of no basket in almost four minutes with a baseline jumper. After the Lancers worked the ball under and missed two close in shots on which the Falcons were hotly contesting them. Glenn moved down court and Muncie's lay-in off a nice Vanc/a pass, cut the score to 47-46 w ith 1:06 left. How - ever. the Falcons had to get the ball and on Muncie's fifth foul. Wicks again was accurate two times. Rob Mcxvre came right back with a lay-in. cutting it to a single point one more time at the 50 second mard. but the Lancers ran off 32 precious seconds before a foul stopped the clock with :18 showing. Seldom used Wes Busard stepped to the line and drilled two key free throws and strange as it may seem, in this final 18 seconds LaVille was to score eight points from the line as Glenn turned the ball over once, missed a couple of shots and Savill made the game's last six points one at a time in the final nine seconds. The Lancers connected on 31 of 41 free throws for the win to Glenn s 10 of 16. This included a big 17 free throws in their 25 point final stan/a as this was the deciding factor in the ball game. Savill topped all scorers with 19 points, four baskets and 11 of 14 from the line. He played the crucial part of the game with four personal fouls but the Falcons just couldn't draw the fifth from him. Dvkstra ended with 13 points while Wicks hit 10. all from the foul line. Ochs was the leading scorer for the Falcons with 16, 12 coming in the first half to keep their hopes alive. He was the only plaver on either team to make more than four baskets in this game of fouls, turnovers and free throw s. Box Score LaVille fg ft fta p Miller 10 0 0 McGriff 3 0 0 5 Dvkstra 4 5 7 2
